Construction Site: Monday 6-18: All Day

The usual safety gear and tools are set out, but today instead of bricks to lay not dirty there are stacks of wood that need to be cut.

"Yeah, I'm letting you use the sharp objects today," Xander says with a small smile, proceeding into a rather extended and handwavy safety lecture. And then there's no smile. "Screw around near them and you'll be outta here so fast your ass'll give off sparks when it hits the sidewalk."

For a change, today Bel wasn't keeping an eye out for someone to bring him food. He brought his own and sat alone eating.

Anders had been lurking behind a nearby tree like the big dork he was.

"I would've brought you lunch, you know," he said finally, stepping into view.

"And put a potion in it or something?" Bel said sullenly, not looking at Anders.

"What -- no!" Anders's shoulders sagged. "I deserved that. I know."

"I really don't want to talk about this," Bel said sullenly, picking at his sandwich.

"We have to talk about it," Anders insisted. "I'm not gonna let this sit and just get worse."

"It can get worse?" Bel snorted.

"Look, I frakked up, all right?" Anders sat down heavily on the far end of the bench opposite Bel. "I know I did. And if you want to just . . . if you want to . . ."

He faltered. "I can just leave."

Bel glanced around at the busy construction site. "This is hardly the time or place to have this kind of discussion, don't you think?" he said.

"Probably not," Anders mumbled. "Just promise me we'll talk about it later? Please?"

Bel shrugged noncommittally.

"Please," Anders said again, quietly.

"Come find me after work," Bel said gruffly. Of course, he didn't say he was going to make the finding easy.

Anders, who'd noticed the lack of instructions on where exactly he'd find Bel, nodded. "I will. I'm sorry. And it probably doesn't mean a whole lot to you right now, but I love you," he said as he got up to leave.

Bel didn't say anything, but he did finally lift his head and look at Anders.

Anders looked back at him, a mixture of regret and hurt in his eyes. "I'll see you later, then, I guess," he said, holding Bel's gaze as he slowly backed away.
