History Of Witchcraft [Week 4 : Thursday, Period 4, Main Campfire]

Phoebe was leaning against a tree when the group showed up at the main campfire in the campgrounds as per usual. There were handouts and a selection of snacks from J GOB.

"Okay, so last week we talked about the early beginnings of what was called The Burning Times and the way that two entire groups of people were wiped out for not conforming or bowing to those in power. I honestly wish that had been the end of it... or the worst of it."

She passed out some handouts. "When the large scale witch hunts began across Europe, they were not sanctioned by the church, but were more the cause of mass hysteria... and one of the largest conspiracy theories ever." She frowned. "Of course, the Malleus Maleficarum really didn't help matters and instead fueled the hysteria and panic. The Malleus Maleficarum or "The Hammer of Witches" was a book originally printed in 1456 and contained guidelines on how to find witches and destroy them. And oh yeah, it taught that witches were more often women than men and best ways to convict them." She sighed. "Real witch or not, the Hammer was a dangerous thing to be in print."

She took a drink from her cup. "The Witch Trials were extensive and very little evidence was needed to accuse and then convict someone of witchcraft. In fact, one of the things that could bring you to trial and execution was the proof that you had one or more witches in your family." She grinned cheerfully. "They would have arrested me immediately... and that would have been a bad plan on their part. Other proof of being a witch was to have sexual relationships with a demon...." She frowned. "A lot of people died during those times and most of them had never done anything wrong -- and were not even witches. The witch trials are said to have finally ended in the early 18th century."

She passed out a few more hand outs.

"Okay, so today, we're going to pretend that we're one of the groups who have been loudly protesting the witch hunts and executions. One of our beloved leaders has been taken and found guilty of witchcraft. She is to be executed. We need to decide what to do. Are we going to try to help her? How? Or are we going to stay quiet and safe?"

Wyatt was frowning through a great deal of the lecture. He really didn't like this part of history.

Chris was taking notes, but he managed to throw one at Wyatt.

Dude, have you talked to Piper since... you know?

Wyatt glanced over at Chris and shook his head.

Chris sighed and wrote another note.

I hope she's okay. Do you think we went over the line?

I'm sure she's fine, Wyatt wrote back. If she figured out it was us, she would've called us by now to yell at us or something.

Good point. I wonder if the window and coffee table have broken yet.

The window did, she mentioned that to me. And Dad fixed it for her for free.

Chris raised an eyebrow at his brother. That's a good sign, right?

Totally, Wyatt wrote. Gives her even more reason to call him.

Chris grinned at his brother. It looked like their plans were finally paying off.

Adam took notes, wondering just how people got through these times.

Anders was a little bit flaily all through the lecture. Hey, look, he had an astoundingly high witch-to-nonwitch ratio among his friends. This whole idea had him kind of freaked.

"I'd do whatever I could to help her," Wyatt said without hesitation.

Lana nodded. "We can't just let them kill her."

Re: Assignment

"No frakking way," Anders agreed. "For that, I'd totally become that dude with the beret that people have on t-shirts and stuff. Even though I have no idea what his name is."

Re: Assignment

"So we mug the executioner and have someone take his place," Wyatt said. "We put people with weapons in the crowd. And someone to cause a distraction. Then the not-executioner frees our beloved leader, and the people in the crowd help her escape."

It's clear that Wyatt had seen far too many movies.

"Dude, you watch too many movies," Chris said. "We have to be way more low key if we don't want to risk outing ourselves."

Re: Assignment

[personal profile] blessed_twice 2007-06-07 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Dude, let me know who we are," Wyatt said. "Let them know how powerful we are and what a mistake it is to mess with us."

"You need people with weapons?" Summer asked. "Because I have a fork and I'm not afraid to use it."

Anders gave Summer an odd sidelong look. "Okay, that's just frakked up."

Re: Assignment

[personal profile] absolutesnark 2007-06-07 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Summer peered at Anders. "It's not like I was gonna stab you with it. Unless you give me good reason to."

Re: Assignment

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey, now, I just escaped getting possibly stabbed by one girl already today!" Anders exclaimed. "Two in one day is too damn many!"

"Then don't give me reason to," Summer said simply, snickering.
