Interdisciplinary Studies or whatever, Class 4, Wednesday, Period 5

Today's class was held in the Danger Room. Squall had emailed the students, but the email went out late, so the chalkboard was up by the main campfire with "INTER~ S. MEET IN DANGER RM" scrawled on it.

As the class entered, they'd find the Danger Room set up to look like... The campground, next to the gym. Oooh. How special.

Squall was leaning nonchalantly against the outside of the gym, picking at his teeth, with his gunblade speared into the ground next to him. He looked... More than usual. More alert, more alive, stronger, faster... He's normally pretty bad-ass, but he was a whole order of magnitude more awesome today.

Not that that improved his personality at all.

When everyone had arrived, he tossed the sign-in clipboard to a student and shouldered his gunblade. "You're here to learn important stuff, so today, class, we are learning self-defense." He looked them all over with a smirk, and shrugged. "I'm sure plenty of you already know how to defend yourself, and you're pretty good at fighting. I'm not going to make you learn the basics if you don't want to. Hands up, anyone who thinks that this lesson is pointless for them. "

When the hands raised, Squall scratched his head and shrugged at them. "Okay, you all go wait in the gym. I'll start the wusses off with some warmups and be there in a minute."

As they walked off, Squall showed the rest of the class some basic stretches and warm-up exercises to get the blood and the chi flowing. "Remember, feet wide apart, knees bent, and breathe from the stomach, not the chest," he cautioned them. "Also, ground and center yourself, or whatever you want to call it. Become one with your inner whatever, and feel the universe yadda yadda through you... Look, it works, okay? Just do it." And with that, he left them to it.

...And then he went to the gym. See the OCD below for the surprise.

When he came back a few minutes later, there was an inhuman screeching and wailing going on behind him. "Ignore the noise," he said.

"Now, I don't have enough time to ACTUALLY teach you self-defense, so we're going to go for the next best thing." And so he instructed them on how to break away if someone grabs you. He told them where to aim on the body for maximum pain -- eyes, throat, kneecaps, groin, that sort of thing -- and showed them some techniques for doing just that, especially while being grabbed. All sorts of stuff like that, in the general "if someone attacks you, cause them lots of pain so you can run away" school of thought.

[Wait for OCD! OCD up... enjoy!]

[ETA: Mun is at work, and apologizes; meant to be here for this class to take pings, and couldn't. Am updating for him.

1) No weapons beforehand, sorry. But there's a moddable copy of the weapons locker in the corner. If your char would think to grab a weapon while he's talking to the other group - or would run for one once the surprise appears - take anything you like.

2) Lightning in Final Fantasy is magical and not physical, so don't worry (OOC) about metal weapons conducting. Feel free to worry IC, if you like. :)

3) Physical attacks and normal weapons can totally hurt it, yes. Lightning-based magic, if anybody has any, will actually heal it, and water-based magic will be especially harmful. [Speaking of water magic, the mun would like to point to the ETA note from last week. Not that it's required in any way to take the beastie down, but if you would have thought to bring it along and try it out? Have at.]

"I never said I can't learn anything," Setsuna said with an exasperated sigh. "One can always learn something from any experience. It's just you can get a whole lot more out of the experience if there's actually something more behind it. Not just this apathy. Or pretending to care, because that just cheapens the experience even more."

"I can learn something, yes, but I feel my time could be spent learning something much more valuable...."

"Ugh, don't you get it? It isn't about the material that's being taught, it's about how it's being handled! I could be sitting in a classroom having someone trying to teach me how to walk, but if they're engaged and it means something to them and they don't just throw things out that belittle the students or their intelligence....I'd learn something there. A new perspective, something valuable that isn't just me feeling like I've wasted my time..."

"The smallest things are often the ones we take for granted; stepping back and observing them can open up whole new worlds of views," Setsuna retorted. "Apathy, however, only closes those views instead of opening them. Not coming to class is, unfortunately, not an option for me. My roommate is in this class with me and if I were to start skipping, she wouldn't let me hear the end of it. I value my time, but I value my peace more."
