Goth Eye for the Prep Guy, Tuesday 1st Period, 6/5/07

The desk in the front of the room held five dolls and a cd player playing pop music. Abby stood nearby with large headphones over her ears and an even larger propane torch in her hands.

"This is regular pop music." Abby said loudly, pointing at the dolls who were bobbing their heads happily. "Horrible, isn't it? Being a goth isn't all black clothes and mascara. It's about the music, the books, the attitude. And sometimes it's about setting annoying things on fire."

Abby turned the knob on the torch and flambed the plastic dolls. "Now that we've said 'bye, bye, bye' to that travesty, it's time to work on our new volunteer. Remember you're not just dressing Anders in new clothes; you're teaching him how to act like a goth."

See, Anders had been way too cheerfully dazed -- in that way that makes you agree to anything --this morning to fully realize what he'd gotten himself into.

Now? He was looking pretty panicked.

Well, Anders did see what happened to Bel... He has every reason to be a bit panicked, really.

Mac smiled innocently at him. "Heeey, Anders."

Well, yes, he had seen that and he was feeling Just a Little Bit Doomed by now.

Okay, maybe more than a bit.

"Mac?" he asked. No, begged might be the right word. "Just leave some part of me vaguely recognizable? Please?"

Well, you could argue that Anders scared people sometimes, maybe, possibly, if you stretched and squinted funny . . . right? And he did spend a lot of time on the roof. It was sort of two out of three. Ish.

"See, as long as I don't have to do the makeup thing? I could almost live with that."

He was unreasonable like that sometimes.

"I'm not actually sure how I got myself into this," Anders replied dismally. Oh, look, did 'dismal' get him any goth brownie points? "So what, do I look . . . grumpy and mellow instead? At the same time? Grumpily mellow? Mellowly grumpy? Is that even possible?"

Roxas is standing with his arms crossed over his chest, sizing the guy up, wondering what to do.

"I wonder if we have any of that black lipstick," he says. Mostly just to see if he can get him to panic a little more.

"Lipstick? Lipstick?!? Are we at the point where this is cruel and unusual punishment yet?" Anders complains. Though by now, it's mostly a token sort of complaint. He's really kind of given up by this point.
