Today the class wasn't meeting in the Danger Shop. Following the directions in the note ~~handwavily~~ delivered, the students would find themselves in a clearing with sandbag 'bunkers' at one end facing a large pile of stones and twisted metal that had landed after the school exploded. On the other end, several rows of different types of grenades were laid out carefully. Aly stood in the middle, trying not to be nervous over her students' first experience in class with live explosives.

Once everyone was assembled, she spoke up. "Morning, everybody. As I hope you've noticed by now, we're not in the Danger Shop. Which means that the grenades over there are live. Today's not the day to fool around, and if I see anyone doing so, they'll be lucky if they just get detention."

Confident she had everyone's attention, she nodded. "This is going to be fun. Those of you who haven't handled live rounds before, don't be nervous, you'll do fine." She spent a bit of time going through the development and uses of different types of grenades before going on to the proper procedures for arming and throwing the weapons.

"Grenades aren't always the best choice of explosive," she said, wrapping up. "The delay between pulling the pin and the explosion means you can throw it, but the enemy could throw it back at you or it could bounce off a wall and roll back towards one of your allies. So what I want you to do today before trying them for yourself is discuss with a partner or two the tactical advantages of grenades. Why use them and not a Molotov cocktail that can't come back at you? Or a gun which has a longer range?"

"After that, come over and try them out for yourself."

"Accuracy would be a problem there, yeah. But at the same time, grenades seem to be... a little more explodey than, say, a Molotov. Not that Molotovs aren't explodey, just that these seem to be... more."

"Splat?" Haku offered with a grin.

"You're right, and in some cases you really do need the explosion. For example, if you were being pursued a grenade would do more to stop your pursuers than a molotov cocktail would."

"Splat, exactly." Ronan grinned back.

"Grenades just seem more versatile."

"They do, we have something similar at home called exploding tags, but they need to have something to set them off and they're difficult to throw."

Ronan nodded. "We've still go the grenades in my world. It's... pretty much the same as this one." He grinned. "Although we've got a few things that work at home that don't work here. I can't wait until we get to the class on magical explosives."

"We have smoke bombs, but that's about it," Haku said, looking over some of the particular grenades.

"Exploding tags I think might count as magical," he smiled. "But I know what you mean, I look forward to this class every week."

Ronan nodded. "Yeah." He grinned. "One of my friends has a spell that's in to be named after her; Callahan's Unfavorable Instigation. It... involves a big explosion."

He turned his attention back to the assignment. "But we're here to talk about grenades right now," he said. "What do you think of these? The frag versus the concussion grenades?"

"Hmm," Haku studied both of them a moment. "Well I thinkthe concussion grenades would be prefered. The frag grenades have too high of a risk of hitting you and your companions of getting hit by the shrapnel too."

Ronan nodded. "I agree. Also, I feel like in some ways the frag grenades could cause... excessive personal damage? Shrapnel seems like a particularly cruel thing to inflict upon someone, even your enemies, and if there are more effective ways to circumvent life when you need to, you should take them."

Haku smiled brightly. "I agree. That's why I fight with acupunture needles, its much easier to disable someone without killing them that way."

"Really?" Ronan was intrigued by this. "How do you fight with them? Are you accurate enough to throw them, or is it a case of getting close enough to lay them on your opponent?"

"I can throw them from a good distance away," Haku tenetively moved to lightly touch two places on Ronan's neck. "Right here and here, two needles can make it seem like you're dead."

Ronan blinked. "Huh. That's... really pretty cool." He smiled. "So we've got grenades, exploding tags, Unfavorable Instigations, and acupuncture needles. We'd make a pretty eclectic team, I think."

"I think so, probably enough to catch them off guard," he smiled back.
