How to Blow Things Up: Period 2, Week 3

Today the class wasn't meeting in the Danger Shop.  Following the directions in the note handwavily delivered, the students would find themselves in a clearing with sandbag 'bunkers' at one end facing a large pile of stones and twisted metal that had landed after the school exploded.  On the other end, several rows of different types of grenades were laid out carefully.  Aly stood in the middle, trying not to be nervous over her students' first experience in class with live explosives.

Once everyone was assembled, she spoke up.  "Morning, everybody.  As I hope you've noticed by now, we're not in the Danger Shop.  Which means that the grenades over there are live.  Today's not the day to fool around, and if I see anyone doing so, they'll be lucky if they just get detention."

Confident she had everyone's attention, she nodded.  "This is going to be fun.  Those of you who haven't handled live rounds before, don't be nervous, you'll do fine."  She spent a bit of time going through the development and uses of different types of grenades before going on to the proper procedures for arming and throwing the weapons.

"Grenades aren't always the best choice of explosive," she said, wrapping up.   "The delay between pulling the pin and the explosion means you can throw it, but the enemy could throw it back at you or it could bounce off a wall and roll back towards one of your allies.  So what I want you to do today before trying them for yourself is discuss with a partner or two the tactical advantages of grenades.  Why use them and not a Molotov cocktail that can't come back at you?  Or a gun which has a longer range?"

"After that, come over and try them out for yourself."

[OOC:  Whee, things go boom!  Aly's completely serious about the penalties for horsing around in this class.  If you want to get detention ping in the OOC thread, otherwise I'll give you a heads up if your character is skirting the line.  Please wait for the OCD is up!]

"I just don't want to be the person whose hand slips and then the whole class is unconscious," Charlie said, looking anxious. "Although, I didn't do that last week with the fake molotovs. So maybe I'm worrying for nothing."

"Honestly?" Abigail said, leaning in conspiratorially. "I think there are some people in this class who are a lot more spaztastic than you look. I'd bet on one of them knocking us all out before you do."

Charlie snickered in relief and rolled her eyes at herself. "Heh. Thanks. I'm Charlie, by the way." She let out another breath. "Aly's done this before. I should just... chill out."

"I'm Abigail," she said. "It's nice to meet you. And yeah, I figure Aly knows what she's doing. She doesn't seem like the type to blindly trust a bunch of teenagers with destructive things."

"Yeah. I'm taking this class so I won't be so nervous around fires, or explosives," Charlie admitted. "It's helping, I think. I just get wired before we do these demonstrations."

"Feeling wired is better than not being concerned at all. That's when people get sloppy, and accidents happen," Abigail insisted.

"Have you done a lot of this before?" Charlie asked, curious.

"Blowing stuff up with grenades? No. Blowing stuff up in general? Only twice. But both times were awesome," she said.

Heartened, Charlie grinned back at Abigail and asked, "So what were you blowing up? Buildings, or trucks...?" She thought a second and said, "There's a reason to carry a grenade. Mobile targets."

Abigail grinned. "Hey, good point. And we were blowing up buildings. Vampire nests, to be exact; houses that were being used as meeting points and hangouts. It was a really sneaky operation, and we were using special explosives with garlic and stuff in them to really get the job done..." She trailed off, wondering if she'd gotten a bit too detailed.

"Like what Dean and Sam and their dad do?" Charlie asked curiously. "With the salt and all?" She couldn't help being impressed. "Everyone here has been in more fights than I have." Which was very planned on her part, but it made her wish she *could* contribute more.

"Kind of like what Dean and his family do, yeah. Except he said they deal with things like demons and ghosts and weird stuff like that. We only have vampires where I come from." Abigail gave Charlie a gentle look. "It's not a bad thing to not have been in many fights, you know."

Charlie gave Abigail a grateful look. "It feels like it. Like, everyone is fighting bad guys except me." Because that ended so well, last time... "But, who knows. Maybe I can throw a grenade at something, if another psycho in the woods shows up."
