Dealing With Stupid People [Monday, 2nd period]

Instead of telephones, the students in Josh's workshop would find laptops set up.

And coffee, naturally.

"For some reason, people think that because they're hiding behind a keyboard, they're not accountable for what they say," Josh began, taking a sip from his mug. "That's clearly stupid. There are entire websites devoted to mocking such stupidity--not that I've ever gone to them, of course--and I'm sure those of you more technically minded will help out your fellow students from less advanced civilizations."

Josh clapped his hands together. "Because today, you are starting flamewars."

He gave a brief--well, for him--explanation of flamewars, with tangents about Fox News, the Republican party and the general evil of people who put up websites about Bartlet and can't be bothered to learn how to spell his last name correctly, then let them loose on the internet.

Heaven help 'em.

"I'm an alien," Isabel said. "From another planet. Our ship crashed here and were were stranded. So we had to keep what we were a secret, otherwise there was a chance we could would be captured or killed by the government."

"It is. Pretty scary, isn't it?"

Aravis stared at her, trying to piece it together.

And then, slowly, "...you don't know the people who blew up the school, do you?"

"That's the side of the family we don't invite to parties," Isabel said with a perfectly straight face. "They always cause trouble."

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Aravis stared. "...my family's not very pleasant, either," she offered, finally.

"Okay, I have to be honest. They're really not relatives. I have no clue who they are. There's all kinds of planets out there apparently. With all kind of aliens," she explained.

"Oh!" Aravis blushed. "I...well, I did not even know of these...aliens...until I arrived. I was told of that incident on my first day. Apparently the latest class, er, 'kicked their asses'?"

"I'm sorry," Isabel said sincerly. "I shouldn't tease you. You had no way of knowing. But yes, they did. One of my friends even did it naked."

Aravis stared some more. "Was it a boy? Why do the boys here refuse to wear clothes? It's like an epidemic!"

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
"It was a guy. And if you'd seen him you'd be very happy he wasn't wearing anything except some well placed alien good," Isabel laughed. "He was very handsome."

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Aravis smiled. "All the boys here seem to be. Especially the ones who take off their clothing at random. You know, I'd never seen a shirtless man aside from my brothers and friends at court until I arrived here? And now I've seen so much male flesh, I'm nearly immune to the embarrassment."

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
"I think when a guy applies? He needs to submit a picture. And they only let in the cute ones," she said. "I'm not complaining about that policy. But don't say that you're immune. Because that's essentially tempting the island to toss something completely over the top at you."

"More than a naked mutiny gathering outside my cabin?" she asked, arching a brow.

Isabel thought about the weekend that was not supposed to be thought about and waking up half dressed with Cedric. "Oh yeah, more then that. Definitely."

"...more than my king and my...idiot...wrestling in a pond?" she asked, worried. "More than having some boy named John call me on the telephone and ask about licks and inappropriate times and millers?"

Aravis was beginning to get worried.

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Your idiot?" Isabel asked, sensing a story. "And I'm sorry to say, yes. I think the island enjoys seeing us embarrassed."

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Aravis blushed, looking at the screen. "Seely Booth occasionally does not display his intellect. And why is the island cruel?"

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I only know him in passing but he seems nice enough," she smiled. "And he's certainly pretty." Isabel shrugged, "I don't know that cruel is the right word for it. I think maybe it just has a warped sense of humor and as long as your able to laugh at yourself, well nothing truly bad ever happens."

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
"He is that," Aravis smirked. "What sort of strange things happen here, then?"

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know that there's enough time in class to cover ever weird thing," Isabel laughed. "But highlights include most of the student body turning into kids for a weekend. Or the weekend my potential future son and daughter turned up. Or the weekend I spent thinking I was someone else."

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Rikku told me about the hypothetical children," Aravis remembered. "Were you all drugged?"

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
"No. I have pictures," she admitted, reaching into her bag and pulling out her wallet. She held out the two pictures for Avaris. "That's Josh and that's Alexandria. My potential future kids."

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Who is the father?" Aravis asked. "And who rendered these? They're remarkable portraits."

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Josh's dad was my ex. And Alexandria's dad was one of my very best friends," Isabel smiled sadly. "They're both gone now."

"I took them. With my camera, which is a small device that's able to capture an image."

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] notqueenyet.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Astonishing," Aravis commented. "They look like good children. Healthy, good-looking."

Re: ...Um, computer?

[identity profile] izzyalienqueen.livejournal.com 2007-05-29 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Thanks. They were happy. That was what was important to me," she said. "It was nice, if a bit sad to see a what might have been."
