How to Blow Things Up: Period 2, Week 1

Blue hair still bright, Aly waited for the class to assemble in the clearing she'd chosen for today.

"Morning, all," she said with a grin. "For those of who who don't know me, I'm Alianne of Pirate's Swoop. Feel free to call me Aly, if you have a need to be formal, duani is also acceptable, but the first person to call me Miss Aly gets things thrown at them. The class is How to Blow Things Up. Hopefully explosions are acceptable to all of you-" she grinned at those in her Revolutions class - "Because we're going to make a lot of them."

"But not quite today. Today I want to get to know you and talk about a few important things before anything gets blown up. First of all, not all of our classes are going to be in the Danger Room. We're going to be working with real explosives with the real possibility of people getting hurt. That means that if we're working with them and I tell you to do something, you need to do it immediately. No questions, no what-ifs, no counterpoints, get down or get out of the way or stop what you're doing."

"If you think that's going to be a problem for you, that's fine, but you need to go find a new class now."

"Secondly, this is a class about explosives - C4, hand grenades, TNT, the like. We're going to have a class on magical ways, but outside of that , if you have special abilities that allows you to blow up things - or set them on fire -" she glanced at Zuko ~~if he was there~~ "I'd prefer the focus stay on the more chemical explosives."

"And finally," she began passing out what looked like basic floorplans of the school. "For the last class, you're each going to design a strategy for blowing up the school. I realise the idea is a bit passé after our visitors a few Saturdays ago, but let's pretend it's not the case. Take the floorplans, take a look at them, and keep the project in mind as the workshop progresses."

She paused, watching the class. "Now that that's out of the way, why don't you all introduce yourselves - even those I've already met, yes, and tell me a bit about yourself as well as your familiarity or experience with making things go boom."

Charlier was taking very serious notes here, because the last thing she wants is to do this on accident. She also shot Zuko a considering look, remembering what he said yesterday in workshop about being a 'firebender.' What was that, anyway?

"Hey," Dean said quietly, nudging her elbow. "How's it going so far?"

Charlie put her pen down and flexed her fingers, smiling at Dean. "It's going good! All my cabin mates that I've met are cool, and I had Stabbing Things yesterday, and Professor Deadpool wasn't mad that I hadn't signed up for it on purpose!"

Dean nodded. "Yeah, that kinda thing happens a lot around here. Lots of paperwork errors. The office isn't the most efficient place ever. And then there's things like your best friend signing you up for flight class when he knows you hate flying."

"Alec did that to you? Oh, that's so mean," Charlie said sympathetically, but smiling a little. "Why did he do that?" She glanced toward Aly. "This teacher seems cool. Maybe the one in Flying won't make you do it?"

"This was last summer," Dean said. "Anakin taught it then too -- he was pretty cool about it actually. He's my faculty mentor too. Helped me a lot with some fallout from a... really bad incident I had happen."

"Incident?" Charlie shook her head. "Um, never mind." Although she really, really wanted to know. Because everyone here seemed so happy to be different, so okay with everything, but it would be ... nice... to have someone to talk to about her past 'incidents.' "I'm glad it worked out, though. And this class looks cool. The teacher's taking it seriously, so no one should get hurt, right?"

"They're pretty good at not letting the students get hurt in class," Dean assured her. "And yeah, incident. My friend Alec's a transgenic -- created by this group called Manticore to be a weapon. They came here after him and got me by accident. They weren't nice people." He shrugged, shaking off the memories. "But Alec, Dawn and my family came and got me out."

"Created to be a weapon?" And she could hear her voice going up in pitch, but couldn't stop it. Her fingers tightened on the pen, and she swallowed, hard. "Are they still around, looking for him? And what's trangenic? What does that mean?"

Oh God Oh God Oh God Oh God....

"Transgenic -- he was created in a test tube, had animal genes and shit spliced in to make him, well, a kind of super soldier, a living weapon. They didn't expect him to be his own person too. And I don't think Manticore's still around but even if they are, after I got snatched, Zoe -- Principal Washburn -- made sure that security was tightened. They won't get through again." Dean frowned worriedly at her. "Are you okay?

Which was so much like what the Shop had done, that Charlie felt a little sick. "That's so wrong," she said softly. "It, um. Reminded me of a news story, from home. About a group kind of like that, called the Shop. Only they did that with drugs."

There was something in Charlie's eyes that made Dean think it was more of a news story. "People suck sometimes," he said softly.

"They really do." Charlie picked up the pen and wrote down something, anything, so she wouldn't have to look at Dean, then gave up and asked him part of what had her freaking out. "Are you okay? Really? You didn't get hurt too bad?"

"Physically I got a little beat up but nothing serious," Dean said. He hesitated then continued, "But they had these psy-ops who could walk right through you mind..." He couldn't keep from shuddering even now.

"Ugh," Charlie responded. "That sounds horrible. Wow. I'm glad someone here could help you with that. This Manticore, they have people willing to do that for them?" She shook her head, getting distressed again. "That's what the Shop-- Department of Scientific Intelligence-- was trying to do. They had these drugs they gave people that were supposed to increase psychic abilities. Telepathy and precognition and, and telekinesis, and stuff."

Dean gave a low whistle. "Talk about an acid trip..."

"Yeah." Charlie started pushing her pencils around again. "One guy, in the article I read, could make people do things he wanted them to do-- 'push' them with his mind. But he was using it for things like helping them quit smoking, or lose weight." She missed her dad so much, talking about him, without saying who he was. An idea occurred to her, and she gave Dean a worried look. "This Anakin, he's checking to make sure you don't have any side effects? Like an, um, richochet? In your brain?"

Dean frowned. "Richochet?"

"People could get hurt, from having their minds messed with. The guy in the article, he was careful, made sure to check on the people he helped, but..." Charlie bit her lip, studying Dean. "How long ago was this? 'Cause if it's more than a couple weeks, you're probably fine." She turned red. "I'm probably being alarmist."

"It was the end of March," Dean said, still frowning. Anakin would've noticed something in their mind shield lessons if there was something to notice, wouldn't he?

"Oh, then you're probably okay," Charlie said, taking a huge breath of relief. "'Cause the people that he helped usually started getting bad headaches and zoning out within a week or so, if something went wrong. So you're safe." She bit her lip. "But maybe you should talk to Professor Anakin anyway." Charlie shook her head, upset again. "Better safe than sorry."

"Yeah," Dean said. "But I'm sure you're right that I'm fine. I mean I feel fine and all and..."

Rikku sighed contentedly. This summer proved, in her mind, that Fate was real, and that it was very happy with her for bringing Tidus back. And had decided that she should have the best classes it could possibly come up with for a summer term.

She was bouncing in her seat a lot and murmuring "So, so great" under her breath.

D was available should anyone want or need ~~though I have a feeling they probably won't, not on the first day at least~~.
