Sociology of Space Travel, Final, 6th Period

A note posted on the door to the usual classroom directed the students to the Danger Room. Entering the room, the students found it considerably darker, the floors covered in metal decking, and lighting mounted on the walls, though the walls themselves were barely visible. Pictures clung to nearly every vertical surface, and the edges of the corridor were littered with candles, dogtags, and other personal effects. Professor Roslin waited for them there, eyes brushing over the myriad pictures along the wall. Her expression was somber as she turned to regard them.

"Good afternoon," she said, "and welcome aboard Galactica." She gave a slight smile. "Well, a decent facsimile there of, at least. Like the theoretical ships we've been discussing, Galactica is on a long journey, one that has a definite end, but no clear map; they are finding trail markers as they go. The images you see on these walls are the lives lost in her travels. They are civilians and pilots; parents and children. Their images are posted here so they are not forgotten."

Here, Laura paused, removing her glasses. She folded her arms across her chest, regarding her students. "The exam today is a single question: What does it take to maintain a society? Not an easy question to answer, I know, but after our discussions this term, I'd like to hear more about what you think and what you have to say. There's no right or wrong answer, but I would like you to defend your answers as best you can. You'll find blue books on your desks behind you.

"For what it's worth, I've appreciated the time we've shared this term. You've been an engaging class, and I wish you all well as you go on from here." A slow grin spread across her features. "Now -- off to work, and when you're done turn in your books next to the door."

As the students turned, they found the corridor they'd passed had morphed again into desks, only the front of the classroom remaining dressed as the memorial wall. The professor was back, perusing pictures as they took their seats.

[Thank you all for your patience with me this term! OCD threads coming up!]

D ran the tips of her fingers along the edge of the ledge while she passed slowly through the corridor.

She was going to have a lot of thinking and question asking to do after this exam.

Sam was solemn as she passed through the corridor, which evoked strong memories of the SGC.

Naomi gazed around, it had been a while since she had been on a proper starship.
