DAMM - Period 1 Monday - The Final Countdown

Byron appeared before the class in the usual way and bowed to them.

"Greetings students! Today is the day of your Final exam! Follow me! To the DANGER SHOP!"

As the class moved to the danger shop, Byron explained the they would be presented with a situation that they will have to resolve. Each student had to pick at least one door, but could do as many as they like after that. Arcane, alchemical, and mundane items would be available for them to assemble whatever sort of solution might come into their heads.

"How come?" Willow asked her.

"It's just... creeeeepy. And it smells like... Burnt band aids."

Willow took notes. "Any weird noises?"

The little girl thought about it.

"I dunno... Maybe, sometimes, really late at night?"

Willow kept writing. "Anything under the bed or closet-only?"

"Closet only."

"Any weird smells besides the band-aids?"

The little girl just shook her head.

"Just the bandaids."

"Does the door ever open on its own?"

"I dunno, I hide under the covers."

"An acceptable coping mechanism," Willow agreed. "Ever fling a shoe in there just to see what would happen?"

The little girl shook her head.

"All my other shoes are in the closet... So I only got the one pair."

"All right, experiment number one," Willow said. She reached into her supplies for a shoe. Having lost one of her own while fighting the trolls she had known to plan in advance. "Feel free to take cover if you like."

Willow went to open the closet door and fling an old sneaker into it.

The shoe is flung into the closet. It hits the back wall and falls to the ground.

The closet does in fact have a very creepy vibe (and not even in a "good place for a henge" sort of way) and smells faintly of brimstone.

The little girl has crawled under her bed covers.

"Huh," Willow said. She decided to try old-fashioned means. "Hello? Anyone in there?"

No answer.

Willow gathered up some energy and sent a ball of light in to see if it illuminated anything.

If Willow searches very carefully, she might notice some runes carved on inner door frame.

Willow squinted at the runes to see if she could see them better.

The carvings are fairly standard. Willow should be able to make out one particular part that mentions something about the "Northeast Gate".

Willow copied the runes as best she could into her notebook. Then she tried to see if she could orient herself to find where Northeast was.

The position of the sun, which Willow can see through a nearby window, reveals that the room is in the Northeast corner of the house and the closet is roughly on the Northeast wall or the room.

"Huh," Willow said when she figured that out. For the girl's benefit she said. "We may have an open doorway on our hands. Well moreso than the obvious door to the closet. And all things considered you'd think I of all people would've thought of a dimensional portal being inside of a closet as a possibility, but in my defense I've had a lot on my mind. Either way, let's see if we can close it."

Willow put together the ingredients for a spell that would block the entrance of any evil things and cast it on the closet.

The little girl watched Willow with wide eyes, most of what she said going over right over her head.

Willow's spell settles over the closet and holds. The portal is not gone, but nothing evil will come out of it.

"So... Bad stuff won't come out?"

"Yep," Willow said. "No pouncing by closet-based evil during the night."
