Conflict Management and Resolution: Mon Period 4 - Final Class April 23

As the students filed into the Danger Room a large table full of sugary goodness treats was laid out as the final offering before the semester ended. Wilson was standing quietly by the table with a sad smile on his face as he marked off names.

“Well, good morning everybody, let’s get to it shall we? Please find the room with your name on it, inside you will find your practical final. Good luck, it’s been a wonderful class and I wish each of you a fantastic summer and for our graduating seniors, it’s been an honor to teach you.”

Stepping back, he waved the students to their individual rooms and started the scenario.

As the students sat down in their room they are face with a life sized chess board. On either side of the board stand pieces, white (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/danaedark/chess-white.png) and black (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/danaedark/chess-black.png). Currently the two groups are busy squabbling amongst themselves, something about the pawns rebelling against going up on the squares first.

Your goal here is obviously to help the normally close knit family resolve its conflict.

Well, you’ve managed to get the pieces up on the boards but now the rooks and knights are taking umbrage to the orders of the queen and there is stress in the work place. Work with the conflicting parties to help smooth things over and get the group ready to face their next challenge.

The interpersonal conflicts have been resolved, go you! Now the two sides stand head to head (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/danaedark/chessset.png) on the verge of battle. Negotiate a peaceful solution to their conflict!

Congratulations! You’ve avoided a war.

Now sit down with the leaders (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/danaedark/whitechess.png) of both sides (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/danaedark/blackchess.png) and help them come to a lasting understanding of each other so that their two families will never come to the brink of war again!

I refuse to have an OOC! If I don’t then the post never ends and I don’t have to say goodbye to this class!!

Phoebe was here and decided on ways to help resolve the conflict.

Phoebe may be looking shaky as she tries to help figure out the issues.

Phoebe stares for a long moment and starts talking to each side and exchanging ideas with them. She may have personal experience with this one.

By this staghe, Phoebe is a little calmer, but she also seems to be looking around her for something.

She helps draw out a treat with a [plan for lasting peace... and free ice cream on certain days.

*clings*

Lana took a deep breath and got ready to work on the conflict.

Lana's feeling a bit more confident here as she prepares to listen to the issues.

Lana's tired, but ready to help them avoid a war.

Lana helps negotiate a peaceful agreement that will last.

*hugs and clings*

Luke frowned. "Does it make a huge difference who arrives first?" he asked.

Luke put his hands into his sleeves and sighed. "Okay," he said to a nearby rook, "what seems to be the problem now?"

This was what Jedi did, right?

Luke took a deep breath. "Have you actually seen war?" he asked.

Luke really, really wished Leia were around for this part, but he had been paying attention to her--admittedly brief-- correspondence since the Death Star blew.

"This is easy," he said, smiling reassuringly at the two sides.

The white pawns (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/danaedark/chess-white.png) blinked and then all stood in a straight little line and said ... in stereo.

"It is imperative that we protect our queen!"

The queen, huffed and crossed her arms.

"But I *am* queen and as such should lead the family in battle."

There was a bit of muttering between the two sides and someone mentioned that their favorite color was yellow but when all was said and done, there was a shaking of heads and a scuffling of feet in response to Luke's question.

"There's more to leading than field position, your Highness," Luke pointed out gently. "You can still be a leader and allow your family to protect you a bit."

Peter did his best to take in the whole scenario and try to find out if he could hear both sides of the story. Luckily for him he had a lot of experience with interfamily issues ~~if not reading all the threads before commenting~~ so he drew on that to help the pawns feel like their job of going first was an honor, not a burden that they had to take on just because they were the ~~younger brother~~ shortest pieces on the board.

"I figured," he said, pressing his lips together. "Okay," he continued, blowing out a breath. "I'm 18. In the last year I've lost hundreds of friends and my entire family in a war that stretched across a galaxy. It escalated to a point where a weapon to destroy planets was not just built, it was used against one. Millions of lives were lost in a blink of an eye. Trillions of lives have been destroyed as this conflict has gone on. It's tragic. It's obscene. It's beyond pointless." He looked from one side to the other. "Don't think that war is the only choice you have. It's not."

Conflict because of a woman of authority with strong opinions? Peter was all over it. Heck, after smoothing things out between his ma and, well, everyone else his ma came in contact with this part of the challenge was easy.

Peter got both sides to get along and moved on to the next part.
