Defense Against Malicious Magic - Monday Period 1

"I herd the radio broadcast last night. Having a daughter of my own I can sympathize with your situation. This will be a free study period, or, if any of you have your wee ones with you, I would be happy to answer their questions. I'm sure my TAs would as well.

The only thing I have to say on the subject of having children while engaging in a battle against darker forces is that you firstly keep them safe. Your home should be a veritable cornucopia of protective measures both mundane and arcane. Never underestimate the value of a good old fashioned, ear splitting, alarm.

And secondly, you must be firm with them! Do not give into their demands! Particularly if they want their own bathroom and the only room with one is in the northeast corner of the house."

"Whichever one is baking that day!" Bronwyn answers promptly.

"Very good answer," Willow had to admit. "So Bridge is your Daddy but I'm still Aunt Willow?"

"...Who else would you be?" Bronwyn peers up. "Is this a Pretend game? You could be a princess onna ship and I could be a Pirate and come steal your booty! I gotta eyepatch like Daddy's n' everything, see?"

She digs it out of her backpack and puts it on. A little crooked.

Willow had been hoping and hoping but didn't want to ask directly just because wow, awkward if the answer was no. "Oh yay! We could totally do pretend games. The couches in the common rooms make great ships, and I've got a couple of friends who are pirates."

"Daddy says a pirate does the radio sometimes. I listened last night but it was Aunt Nadia who's not really my Aunt like you but she was Daddy's little sister when he was in Big Kid School so she's kinda my Aunt and and and she talked about me onna radio!"

"She did?" Willow hadn't listened to the radio report. But she saw no reason to doubt this. "Did the squirrels say hi?"

"Maybe? I don't speak Squirrel. They made noises when Aunt Nadia's little girl tried to hug them!"

"I could introduce you," Willow offered.

"Oooh!" Bronwyn bounces. "I wouldn't try to hug them though. They're little. They could get squishied."

"You can hug them very gently," Willow said. "They also like nuts."

"I like nuts too!" Bronwyn grins. "And bananas and oranges and Twinkies and waffles and bacon cheeseburgers shh don't tell great-gramma."

Willow nodded solemnly. "Bacon cheeseburgers are both yummy and naughty."

"Daddy says it's okay to be a little naughty sometimes. With super-vision." Bronwyn frowns. "And then Daddy says that means when they're watching me and not that they can see through walls but I don't believe them."

"Daddies aren't supposed to talk about the walls part," Willow whispered, as though this were a great secret. "It's in the Daddy handbook."

"I THOUGHT SO. I know somebody who can walk through walls though and that's not a secret. His name's Jack and he's my Aunt Z's friend and sometimes he's a moron but not always." Bronwyn looks shifty. "I'm mebbe not s'posed to say that but Aunt Z says it."

"Is Jack a ghost?" Willow asked.

"No! He's not Uncle Ghost. Uncle Ghost is Uncle Ghost!"

"Naturally," Willow replied. Because really that could be true for any dimension she knew of.

"Sometimes people are other people kinda, like you and Big Aunt Willow and Aunt Dawns but they're not the same people 'cause everybody's different inside."

"This is very true," Willow said. "Even if there was another you, it wouldn't be you. Because you're you and other you is other you."

"I don't think there's another me though 'cause Daddies said I was very 'spensive to make and saving the world really doesn't pay much moneys no matter which world it is so I might have to wait a while for a little brother or sister."

"Which does answer a very delicate question that I really wanted to ask but wasn't sure I could, so thank you for that," Willow told her.

"I was made inna jar," Bronwyn says matter-of-fact-ly.

"Which just goes to show that you were thoughtful enough to be into recycling right from the start," Willow replied.

"Uh-huh 'cause only bad people burn up planets and then go take other peoples'es." Bronwyn looks over at Bridge, who's standing up and starting to look around for her. "I better go back to Daddy 'fore he goes looking for me and gets losted again." She rolls her eyes.
