US Government [Friday, April 13, 1st period]

There was a lectern in the front of the class with a hastily sketched seal of the President of the United States on in.

Josh lounged behind it. "Okay. We've talked about all of the major branches of government and ignored what the states do, as is right and proper. There is one more group of people we should probably talk about. Their job is to misinterpret everything you do, poke holes in your brilliant programs, and general make your life miserable. They call themselves the Fourth Estate and think they're sooooooo important just because they're protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution."

Josh made a "blah, blah, blah" gesture with his hands. "They are the press corps and a bigger bunch of incompetent alcoholics you couldn't hope to meet. Today, you get to be them!"

He straightened up behind the lectern. "And I will be myself and tell you all why you're wrong."

"I told him about it," Josh said, flailing. "But he tricked me!"

Irulan frowned, "A trick? So, you considered inflation, a very serious topic in any planet as a joke?"

"Of course not!" Josh said. "The president has a Nobel Prize in economics! So if there was a problem with inflation, I was sure he would have a plan. We just weren't ready to share it yet."

"Then, you do admit that there is a secret plan inflation?" This was starting to be amusing.

Josh banged his head on the podium. "Noooooo."

"No, there isn't a plan to fight inflation? Or no, it isn't a secret?" This was very amusing indeed.

"I'm so lucky I'm not working for him any more," Josh whimpered. "It's not a secret any more. There's a plan. I'm just not telling you about it. I'm telling other reporters. Neener neener whatever."

"Are you suggesting your playing favorites, Mr. Lyman?" Irulan asked. This was fantastic! It was like the interrogation game she used to play.

"Yes!" Josh said. "You shouldn't spite me! I'll tell all the other reporters cool things and not you! You'll be shunned at the back of the press bus."

"So, on record, Mr. Lyman, you admit that you are actively censoring?" Irulan inquired with a stern eye, "Isn't that against your constitution? The Freedom of Speech?"

"Oh, it's not censoring. You'll just have to get your news from the other reporters. Then you'll get fired, they'll send in a new reporter and everyone wins." Josh grinned. "Except you, but I'm okay with that."

"Because I am the only one who insist on asking about your secret plan to fight inflation?" Irulan paused, "Is this a conspiracy? And how far does this reach into the government?"

Josh rolled his eyes. "Yep, it's a vast conspiracy going straight to the heart of the government."

Josh had not learned his lesson about sarcasm and the podium.

"You do admit that the conspiracy implicates even the presidency." If Irulan was a real reporter she would have flashed him a triumphant smile by now.

Josh rolled his eyes.

"I didn't."

"You said and I quote: 'It's a vast conspiracy going straight to the heart of the government'. Are you now denying this statement?"

"Are you sure you don't know Danny?" Josh asked, banging his head on the podium. "Can no one here take a joke?!"

"These are very important matters, Mr. Lyman, lives might be at stake, are you sure you do not want to give me a straight answer?"

Josh banged his head on the podium again. "There's no conspiracy," he said to the rhythm of his head. "I just don't like you."
