Forensic Science - 5th period - Wednesday 4/11

Abby stood by a lab table full of Kwik Stop snacks as the students came into the classroom, drinking from a large cup of Caf-Pow.

“I’m sorry for flaking out on you guys last week so I brought you treats. Plus, everybody gets an automatic A for last week.”

Once people had gotten something to eat, Abby walked over to a wall of the lab where several blank-faced dummies stood in a row. “These are forensic helpers. They stand in a for a body so you can easily see the height or approximate weight of a person. They’re pretty indestructible. I’ve thrown one off a bridge, beat one with a baseball bat and tried to set one on fire.” Abby looked a little too gleeful as she counted off the damage on her fingers. “Today you’ll be using it to replicate the crime. Try to figure out how tall the killer was.”

“But let’s get to the crime scene for today. I’m really excited about it!” Abby led the students through the door of the lab into a posh living room. Movie posters lined the walls in gilded frames and over the mantle place was a larger than life painting of Daisy Adair. Lying across a chaise lounge in front of the fireplace was Daisy’s body, a bloody Oscar statuette nearby.

Parker snorted, then said, "Hardly. He never uses it himself, anyway. Sweetheart and Angel and Darlin', but-- hunh." She frowned, thinking, then said in a more subdued voice, "I don't think he's used my first name in years." She shook that off after a second, and said, "Although now, I really, really, really want you to meet him. Just to see what his reaction would be. I don't know if the fact that your parents are punk rock stars would weigh for or against you, or if the hair would cancel it out, or if he'd just ask you if we were keeping out of trouble."

"'Yes of course Mr. Parker, sir, and on the weekends for fun we read to blind children.'"

Parker threw back her head and chortled. "Awesome. 'How much are you charging 'em, Blondie?'"

"'Oh, no, Mr. Parker, sir,'" Zero said in an appropriately shocked tone. "'We do it out of the goodness of our hearts.' Unless he wants us to charge."

"It's usually a trick question. If you tell him they won't let you charge, but it looks good on college apps, it's all good." Parker grinned. "Okay. This has to happen. With Sydney there, maybe at Graduation. He'd be so, so sad if he missed it."

"Swerval. But I already got into college like two years ago." Yes, Zero knew she sucked. She'd been told that quite often while all her friends were working on their applications.

Parker stuck out her tongue at her. Then shuuushhhed her. "Shhhhh! Not the point! If it's a benefit to your future, it's all cool, even if you're not getting paid." She made a face, then said, "Would your parents want to call me by my first name? They'd let me be Parker, right?"

"They'll let you be whoever you want to be," Zero said with another shrug. "My da up an' reinvented himself when he was sixteen, an' Rat's done it twice. Y'are who y'say y'are." Maybe this was one of those punk things. Zero got those confused with the 'usual' things sometimes, as they were usual to her.

"Cool. Parker. Just and only." Parker nodded very definitely. "Moscow. Your family. L.A. And whatever other trouble I can get into this summer."

"Hopefully 'a lot.' Do me proud, Pinky."
