Abby stood by a lab table full of Kwik Stop snacks as the students came into the classroom, drinking from a large cup of Caf-Pow.

“I’m sorry for flaking out on you guys last week so I brought you treats. Plus, everybody gets an automatic A for last week.”

Once people had gotten something to eat, Abby walked over to a wall of the lab where several blank-faced dummies stood in a row. “These are forensic helpers. They stand in a for a body so you can easily see the height or approximate weight of a person. They’re pretty indestructible. I’ve thrown one off a bridge, beat one with a baseball bat and tried to set one on fire.” Abby looked a little too gleeful as she counted off the damage on her fingers. “Today you’ll be using it to replicate the crime. Try to figure out how tall the killer was.”

“But let’s get to the crime scene for today. I’m really excited about it!” Abby led the students through the door of the lab into a posh living room. Movie posters lined the walls in gilded frames and over the mantle place was a larger than life painting of Daisy Adair. Lying across a chaise lounge in front of the fireplace was Daisy’s body, a bloody Oscar statuette nearby.

"You got to hit it like you mean it," Cassie said with a chuckle.

"But it didn't do anything to deserve it," Mac pointed out. "I've learned that vague respect for inanimate objects never hurts."

"Awww, but it's its purpose to get hit," Cassie said.

"You missed what happened when the last time the everyday obects felt abused," Mac said twisting the dummy's head so she could look at the blank face. "Still... it's all in the name of science, right?" Mac will do most things in the name of experimentation, really.

"Science," Cassie agreed.

Mac finally finished positioning the dummy and applying fake blood, then found herself a replica Oscar statue.

"You want to try first?" she offered.

"Naw, go ahead," Cassie said. "I can kinda cheat at this whole thing and replicate the heights of the suspects, easy."

Mac shrugged, hopping up onto her tiptoes in the hopes of making 5'8", and bringing the statue down firmly on the back of the dummy's head. She closed her eyes instinctively as she hit, despite the fact she was wearing goggles and was relatively protected from fake blood.

"Eugh," she declared the moment she felt the splatter. "That's disgusting. Crime scene recontruction is not the line of work for me."

"Okay, ew," Cassie said. "I agree."

"First thing after this class, I'm taking a long shower," Mac decided. She put the statue back down on the table and went to compare the cast off pattern she'd created with the crime scene photos she'd taken.

"You're sure you don't want to try?" she asked Cassie, having just made such a good job of proving that is was indeed gross.

"Very sure," Cassie said. "Ewwwww."

Mac nodded, taking another photo of her blood splatter. "Very wise," she said. "I think maybe both of us should avoid ticking the box saying 'want to be forensic scientist' on the career aptitude test."

"Yep. One career successfully avoided," Cassie said.

"I hear checking the option for 'florist' isn't a good idea either."

"Why not?" Cassie asked.

"Because it means you're crazy, from what I've heard." She glanced surrupticiously at Cassie. "You've never wanted to be a florist, right?"

Cassie paused. "Nope. Never."

Mac noted the pause, but shrugged and ignored it. "You're safe and sane then, congratulations."

"Good to know," Cassie said.
