Spy Tech, Class Thirteen (04/11)

Wednesday, April 11, Period One

M stood in front of the class, looking especially stern. Once the entire class was assembled, she had Nadia and Marty hand out blue books, and projected the test questions up on the screen behind her desk.

"You have the entire period to complete the test. However, if you finish before the end of the period, you may either speak quietly to one another in the back of the room or you may leave early. Next week we will meet in the Danger Shop for a special exercise, one that I imagine you will all enjoy."

EXAM: Choose two of the following topics and write a brief essay for each.

1. Timepieces such as wrist- or pocketwatches have long been a staple of espionage work. Aside from the two examples shown in class (magnet and saw), describe one way in which a wristwatch or pocketwatch could be modified to create a specialty tool for an espionage agent.

2. Discuss the difficulties and hazards inherent in the use of disguise in the field of espionage. Be sure to address the specific problems a spy might encounter when pretending to be someone he is not.

3. Communications is vital to the field of espionage. Describe one commonplace, easily concealed, portable item that could be used to house a communications device. Keep in mind that the item must still continue to carry out its original function as well.

4. Although the best policy is never to unnecessarily engage the enemy, there are times when an espionage agent has to protect himself. Keeping in mind the three specialty firearms discussed in class, describe one additional way that a firearm could be modified to make it a) more concealable, b) easier to handle, c) more accurate or deadly, or d) useful in a non-traditional manner.

Bonus Question (required for all students): Why is it a bad idea to steal from, lie to, or try to trick your Spy Tech professor?

Annette leaned closer and lowered her voice, "Yeah, I know, it was stupid. But tell me this Parker, why is it I am stupid and immature and totally ignorant, when he was the one who grabbed me and physically started dragging me across the floor? I was shaking, I was scared, I pulled out that gun that was not loaded, the safety on, yet I get the total blame for it. What would everyone say did he actually attack me?" Yeah, Annette had yet to get it out of her system. And Parker did ask...

"Whoa, whoa, wait. He, who? And was it a misunderstanding, is that what you're saying? Or is this guy getting Detention as well?"

Annette scribbled the name Steerpike down on a piece of paper and showed her, then she crinkled it up. "No, it was not a misunderstanding. He physically grabbed me." She fisted her own shirtfront in her hand to show Parker just exactly what she meant. "Then? He started dragging me. Across his floor. And as far as I know? No one has done anything to him. Nadia said she was going to speak to him but I don't know if she has yet or not. I'm supposed to stay completely away from him."

Parker frowned at the name on the piece of paper, and nodded slowly, remembering meeting the guy for all of two minutes at the beginning of the semester. "I'd say that's the best course of action for now. Besides, I think the guy's in the Clinic at the moment, something about a fire at the Principal's Tower yesterday." She shook her head, deciding to leave it to Nadia for now, since she seemed to know more about the situation, but had to ask, "Why was he manhandling you, anyway? Sudden psychotic break?"

Yeah, Annette had heard he was in the clinic. For some reason she had a hard time feeling bad for him. Which was wrong, she knew, and it only caused her self-shame to double. This whole situation was sordid and she just wished it was over with. And crap but she didn't want to answer Parker's question.

She looked back down at her notebook, saying low, "I was in his room; apparently he didn't like me in his room so he thought to get me out."

Parker head-desked. "Yeah, that would do it." Lifting her head from the desk, she said, "And this is why we only investigate our fellow students' living space if we have a large magician, vampire, or assassin on our side." Okay, so, Parker is aware that most of the time she takes her own advice. Shut up. "Some of us are saner than others about break-ins. Does M know about that part of it, I'm assuming?"

"Parker, I did not break in, he invited me inside." Okay, that was crucial. Annette made sure that point was clear. "Tell me something, if you had been in my situation what would you have done? First take into account that I am not skilled in self-defense. None whatsoever. I could have done the balls-kicking but I just didn't think, you know? I sort of panicked."

"Wait, he invited you in, then threw you out?" Parker frowned. "Weirdo. And I-- would probably have lost my temper," she admitted. "And this is why we're not allowed to carry guns in the first place. Although I do better understand the impulse to pull one on him now." She tapped a pencil on her desk, thinking. "I think you should let Nadia handle it for now. I'm sure it'll get to a teacher at some point, and she'll tell you what happened afterward. If she doesn't, then I'd go to M again."

Annette raised her brows; Parker on her side was just great. "Yeah, that's exactly what happened." Minus a few itty-bitty details. "I mean look at me compared to him? I'm short." Did too matter. "There was no way I could defend myself properly."

Nodding, she totally agreed, "I will. And I hope Nadia kicks the crap out of him when he gets out of the clinic." Which sounded way bad. "When he is completely healed of course."

"Yes there was, you just didn't know about it." Parker cocked an eyebrow at Annette, and said, "And maybe M should get you to sign up for the Self-Defense club too, or any classes they've got this summer. It'll at least keep you from panicking if that ever happens again." Although hopefully she'd show better judgment with self-defense moves than she had with a gun. "We'll see what happens after he's not laid up, I suppose. And I'll let you know what M says about having you in Gun Club after I talk to her."

"Nadia is going to teach me self-defense, though if there is a class, I will take it as well." Annette sighed and slouched in her chair. "Okay, Parker. She'll most likely tell you to keep a steady glaring eye on me. I don't think I can go anywhere without feeling like someone is watching me. M told me that is how it was going to be basically from now on. Uhg."

"You do the crime, you do the dime." Parker's lips twitched. "We'll lighten up on you after a while. At least you get why we're being grim and deadly at you. If you didn't, you wouldn't still be here."

Annette was resolute; one day he would get what was coming to him and hopefully she would be there to taunt and tease him with, 'I told you so!'

"I get it. I really do. I just would have been happier seeing he got his too."
