Conflict Management and Resolution: Mon Period 4 - Class # 13 - Apr 9

As the students filed in they would find a nice spread of pastries along with tea, coffee, hot chocolate and other yummies. Wilson was standing behind the desk with his cell phone in his ear discussion something that sounded medical in nature with whoever was on the other line.

A few minutes after everybody got settled, he closed the cell phone with a sigh, shook his head and turned around to face the class.

“Good morning. Today we’re going to focus on the final section of our course, which is Reconciliation. What comes after a violent conflict has been resolved and how to rebuild for a stronger future so that the conflict does not rise again.”

Sliding his phone onto his hip clip, Wilson picked up a cup of coffee and walked to the overhead.

“Let’s begin.”

Lecture:

The lecture today outlined the process of Reconciliation and as most of the units that came before; there were a lot of notes to take.

Apology - Apology is a verbal statement of regret for injurious remarks or behavior.

Forgiveness - Forgiveness is the capacity to pardon someone for a wrong that the person has committed against you. Along with apology, it is a key component of reconciliation.

Refugees - Conflict can cause people to flee an area, either because of intolerable living conditions or forceful expulsion. Such situations can lead to more conflict when refugees try to return home.

Restorative Justice - Restorative justice is justice that is not designed to punish the wrong-doer, but rather to restore the victim and the relationship to the way they were before the offense. " Restorative justice is concerned with healing victims' wounds, restoring offenders to law-abiding lives, and repairing the harm done to relationships and the community.

Trust Building - Trust comes from the understanding that humans are interdependent, that they need each other to survive. Third parties can attempt to use this insight to promote trust between disputing parties.

Truth and Reconciliation

Trauma Healing - When conflict results in physical or psychological abuse, people can become traumatized. Trauma causes victims to continue to suffer, to be almost frozen in time. These resources detail the effects of trauma and offer suggestions for healing.

Peacebuilding- Reconciliation - In long-running inter-group conflicts, after successful negotiation, peacebuilding and reconciliation is necessary to prevent a return to the conflict. In this stage, disputants begin to heal and to rebuild relationships, slowly putting their society back together.

Class Activity:

Wilson looked at his notes on the class discussion and made a face.

“Good grief, how much scotch did I have when I wrote this up?”

The fact that it was written up on a bar napkin should be a clue to the answer for that question but … moving on.

“All right guys, for today’s activity you will be split into groups to handle the reconciliation of the following challenging conflict.”

Turning to the chalk board, he wrote up the scenario.

Peanut butter and Jelly have long been known as a classic partnership but in recent years that partnership soured as Peanut Butter began to stand on sandwiches alone and eventually betrayed Jelly when it matched up with Banana in the sandwich forum. Peanut Butter and Jelly got into an incredibly messy conflict when was finally resolved when Bread stepped in to mediate but now the original partnership between Peanut Butter and Jelly must be reconciled and rebuilt.

You’re assignment is to work with your group to apply the steps you learned in today’s class to this reconciliation attempt. Map out an outline of the steps for how your group would approach this reconciliation. Turn this in at the end of class.

Wilson looked at his own handiwork one last time and shook his head and then he began to put up the groups.

"You didn't do it, the witch possessing you did," Bel said. "You're not responsible for any of it."

"Oh," Marie said. "But she used my body. And people thought it was me."

"Anyone gives you any hassle about it and I'll kick their ass," Bel said.

That got a small smile from Marie. "So far I've only talked to Jamie and Bridge and they were both cool."

"'Course they were," Bel said. "If people aren't going to hold what the Source did against me, they're not going to blame you for what the witch possessing you did."

"I guess so," Marie shrugged. "Did you remember?"

"Yeah," Bel said quietly, looking down. "I could see everything happening, I just couldn't do anything to stop it."

Marie nodded. "I wonder if that would be worse than not remembering at all."

"I don't know," Bel said. "I still have nightmares about it. I wish I could forget."

"Pretty much," Bel said. "But you're okay now, that's what's important."
