Library [04/06]

When Rory came into the library on Friday morning - on time and everything! - she found a sign on the counter reading, "FORMS (NOT FOR EATING)."

She paused, staring at it, and then decided she really didn't want to know. This was probably something like that stupid Chosen One restriction from last year.

She was perched behind the desk, still looking sleepy...but otherwise, looking healthier than she had in weeks.

And naturally she had an enormous cup of coffee in front of her.

Rory decided to get her work done early in the day for once, and took second period to dust shelves.

And since she had done that, she had no qualms about using third period to shop online for her shoes for prom.

She didn't mind using fourth period, either.

By the time lunch had rolled around, Rory had found The Shoes.

She also was happily eating an assortment of junk food that would make her mother proud. But at least she was eating.

During fifth period, Rory got onto Facebook and started browsing through people she might meet at Yale.

It wasn't weird to do that, right?

Sixth period found her considering the boys' pictures especially and wondering if maybe they were cuter in person?

When seventh period rolled around, Rory gathered up all the returned books and placed them back in their spots on the shelves before locking up and heading out to the Perk.

WTF, COMPUTER, WTF.

After enjoying pricking the Doctor's ego Rose entered the library.

"Hullo," she greeted the girl.

"Hi," Rory said, looking up from her computer. "Can I help you find something?"

Rikku wandered into the library uncertainly, but cheered up a bit at seeing Rory there. "Hi!" she waved. "I, uh, kinda need some help with something?"

"Hi!" Rory said, setting down her cleaning things. "Like a book thing or a something else thing?"

"Oh! A book thing. I mean, a library-kinda thing." She waved a bit. "There's, uh. There are books here about ... like."

Her voice dropped a little, and she seemed flustered. "Existence? Dimensions? Dimensional barriers? The dead, the living, the whole ... that kind of thing?"

"In Special Collections, yup," Rory said, nodding. "You need a note to get in and it's kind of dangerous."

Rikku nodded carefully. "I don't mind the dangerous bit. And I have a note. From Professor Deadpool." She produced it, trying to look calm and not like even she thought this was probably a bad idea. "I'm just doing a little research."

Rory looked over the note. "Okay," she said. She went over to the circulation desk and pulled out a pair of dragonhide gloves. "Want me to go back with you?"

Rikku stared at the gloves, swallowing. Yes, mostly, because now she was terrified and ... "No, I'll be okay. Is ... do the books bite?"

"Sometimes," Rory said. "Don't touch anything except what you're looking for. And do not go wandering off."

Rikku took a deep breath and nearly called the whole thing off. Right. Yunie. Okay.

She was a Guardian. She could do this.

"Thank you." And with a definite set to her chin, she took the gloves. Before she could change her mind again.

"Go through the doors and to the right. If the lights go out, come out immediately. If you're back there more than twenty minutes, I'm coming after you," Rory said. "Don't wander off. Seriously. If you ever meet Xander Harris, the guy who owns the apartments? Ask him about getting stuck in Special Collections. ~~We didn't get him out till graduation! No, srsly.~~"

Rikku's eyes got wide. "Wow, twenty minutes, really? I'll work fast. I'll try, I mean."

She turned on her heel and headed back to the Special Collections section.

Rory watched her go, then went back to her work, careful to keep an eye on the doors.

Okay, seeing the Special Collection section made Rikku realize just how bad of an idea this was. But since she was here, she might as well do some research.

She pulled a number of the titles dealing with existence, death, dreamstates, necromancy, dimensional divides, reality, and portals, and began skimming and making notes to herself. Okay, and there was one she avoided entirely because it growled at her.

Fifteen minutes later she packed up and headed over to Rory, feeling a bit ... dizzy. "Whoa. Okay. I get the time limit thing now."

Rory offered a little smile. "You okay, there?"
