Angela glanced at Rikku, registering the lack of bounciness. She shifted to sit slightly closer to her. "Is everything okay?"

Rikku looked up sharply. "Oh. Oh! Hi, sorry." She shook her head. "Kinda having a bad day, that's all. Bad ... break-up kinda thing last night."

Rikku nodded emphatically. "I know! I didn't want to go to class or anything, just ... lay around eating ice cream."

She bit her lip. "This is kinda my first. ... They all suck this bad? Really?"

"I'm not a huge expert?" Angela said. "But that sounds about right. Ice cream and ... have you hit the part where you imagine him begging for you back yet?"

Rikku considered that for a long moment. "I ... no, not yet. It was kind of - abrupt? Like, you think you really know someone and you think everything is going wonderful and then all of a sudden you get hit by a truck and you're kinda just laying there going, 'Okay, this didn't happen.'"

"That was last night."

Angela's stomach twisted in recognition. "The time that happened to me I found out my boyfriend used to kill people," she said. "So I had to wonder who I was, too."

"Wow," Rikku said slowly. "Like, he had to fight in wars, or he was like an assassin-thing? Had he changed, or was he still doing it? Oh! I mean, if that's not nosy."

"Mine was more ... he was always ... I thought he was just a really nice guy and then all of a sudden he was someone else. Someone all scary and creepy and I don't know if he was just pretending all along or maybe I'm just an idiot."

"An assassin. He had changed," Angela said quietly. "But ... it was really hard for me to see, I guess?" She looked at her shoes. "I'm sorry your guy got all scary."

"Yeah, I guess it would be. I'm ... sorry. About your guy, I mean. Sometimes things just don't work out and it just sucks."

"Oh, it wasn't like, evil-killer-crazy? Just that ..." Rikku bit her lip and looked down at her fingers. "He, uh, got kinda ... you know. Grabby. And he's not like that, ever, and then he got mean about it, and he's never mean about anything, and ... it was scary like that. Just, wow, you're this guy underneath and I didn't know."

"We worked it out," Angela said. "I mean, we're still together now, but that break-up was hard."

She looked at Rikku in alarm. "He didn't ... hurt you, did he? Because that sounds really awful."

"Oh!" Rikku smiled. "Oh, I thought you meant ... that's so good, that it worked out. I mean. Really."

"No, no. It wasn't ... I'm okay. I can fight and he wasn't trying to hurt me or anything, just ... kinda insistent." She shook her head again. "So weird. It's like it's not real."
