Sociology of Space Travel, Thursday, 6th Period

Roslin was seated at the front of the classroom, clad in one of her favorite sweaters, layered with a tee shirt and khakis. The brisk wind outside had blown her hair about and, despite her efforts to smooth it down, it was still a bit windblown. As students entered, she remained focused on the file laying open on her desk. She occasionally wrote notes in the margins, frowning.

As the bell rang, she removed her glasses and regarded the class. "Good afternoon, all," she said. "I hope you've had a wonderful week and are looking forward to the weekend. Today, as I'm elbow deep in plotting an invasion other responsibilities, we're going to try something a little different.

"In a group, discuss the things necessary to carry on society on a long space journey, whether it be food and water or paper and pens; one person should take notes and write all of this down. Then I want you to imagine you are on a long trip, traveling through space, and suddenly you find your supplies limited. Think about how long your resources are going to last; decide how the best way to manage those limited resources is going to be. Not everyone will be military or flight crew. How will you organize your society and maintain order? In short, design your own space-faring society, and make sure you turn it in before the end of class.

"Let me know if you have any questions."

Giving a taut smile, Laura left the students to their own devices and returned her attention to her work. She was, of course, available if questions arose.

[Short OCD coming up. Have at.]

"Absolutely," Sam agreed, already wracking her brain for someone D'anna could have fun with. Too bad Kawalsky was probably going with Alanna. "Jack hasn't done any asking yet, either. What are you looking for in a dress?"

"Something becoming a Seahorse, of course!" D teased and her grin returned. "But he will! Who else could he possibly go with than his favorite..."

She paused for just a split second, "Sam, I absolutely refuse to call you a 'thingy'."

She laughed, "Welcome to my life, but we can't decide on anything that covers what we are to each other but doesn't sound either skeezy or pretentious."
