"Alright boys, I promised you last week we'd do something you'd be more interested in, and we are. But don't worry, girls, still plenty of eye candy in this one. Today we're going to be looking at the Bund series, both the novels by Ian Fleming, which started it all, and the various movies. Even a little bit of the various assorted parodies."

Daisy handed out a series of information sheets and showed a few clips of the different Bund movies and the actors. "Now, my question for you, this week, is what is it, exactly, about this character, that makes him so popular? How has it endured over the last half a century? What are some of the political and historical themes that have had to change, especially since the end of the cold war? And, of course, who was the best Bund?"

Why is Bund so popular, even today? How has the changing political climate changed the series (if it has)? Who's the best Bund? Is he even a decent secret agent? I mean, really. Everyone knows who he is. . . .

"Boys like girls in bikinis and explosions," Cassie said. "That's why the series sells so well."

"That's one reason, perhaps, Cassie. . . . But what about the books? You can't watch bikinis or explosions in the books. And you don't need to have a secret agent in a movie to have bikinis and explosions. So why Bund specifically?"

"Well, has anyone here actually read the books?" Cassie asked. "I mean, seriously, the books aren't anywhere near as popular as the movies. And as for why Bund... at this point, it's a presold product. People will go because they know what to expect. It's a franchise thingy."

"That's a good point, Cassie. But the books were popular before the movies ever started. Maybe they're not as much, now, but do you think there might have been another reason for their popularity when they were published?"

"The cold war was a perfect time for spy stories?" Cassie offered.

Daisy smiled slightly. "Should I keep pestering you and ask why it was a perfect time for them?"

"You had the heightened fear of foreign powers and there was this romantic idea of, like, going behind the iron curtain all secret-like and stuff," Cassie said. "So the high-powered political backdrop was an actual setting the people could relate to?"

Daisy nodded. "Sounds good to me."

"People like a suave guy in a tuxedo with a British accent," Zero said. "An' then he saves the world, a lot, which is also swerval."

"So, the magic combination is dashing guy in a tuxedo who saves the world?" Daisy nodded. "I can see that. Thank you, Zero."

"Things explode, the good guy wins, and there are pretty girls."

For all that chit chat you might want to do that isn't class related.

She'd say that Humphrey Bogart would have done the best job, if he'd ever gotten the chance.

I . . . have never actually seen a Bond movie.
