U.S. History- Period Three, Wednesday 3/21
Chuck slumped into the classroom, a good two minutes after the bell had rung. He set his briefcase down on the desk, and looked up at the rows of students.
He was very much not in the mood for this. Chuck sat down at his desk, found that the briefcase was now in the way, shoved it to the side, and watched it fall to the floor. He barely reacted, just gave it a sort of dazed look. Someone had had a late night last night.
Chuck began the lesson, but didn’t move to get up.
“World War Two. Certainly the most exciting war that the world has ever known.” His voice had a Ben Stein quality to it; he sure didn’t sound excited. “You’ll hear a lot about the horrors of war, but the truth is that it was something of an extravaganza. The Nazis prided themselves on their dance skills, and Hitler himself was known to challenge rival leaders to dance-offs. This was the toughest section of the war, especially for Americans. The reason that the allies lost France? Because FDR wasn’t exactly light on his feet.” Chuck’s head gave a motion that could have been a nod or a sleepy bob. “Not even the most striking of jazz hands can make up for the utter lack of footwork that a wheelchair creates.
During this time, almost all of American men were at war. Recent statistics show the percentage to be around 87%. With this staggering loss, the women had to take up the men’s’ jobs. Obviously, they couldn’t do them nearly as well, but they got it in their heads that they could. This was a dark day for men in general, and is easily the greatest tragedy of WWII.
The allied forces (aka, the good guys) stormed the Berlin Wall on May sixth, 1935. This allowed the war to be won, decisively. True, there were some minor skirmishes in the east later on, but nothing too noteworthy, so that won’t be on the test.”
Chuck looked at the clock. There were still twenty minutes left in the period. “I’m going to take your questions, then I’m going to take a nap. Don’t mind me if I get started early.” And with that, he put his head down on the desk, and waited either for a question or the sweet embrace of sleep.
