Forensic Science - March 20th 5th period

Abby is sitting on one of the lab stools, spinning in a circle as the students enter. "I failed at tackling people this week so no talking dead people. So instead we're going to play with computer forensics."

"Not everything is blood, guts and fingerprints. A lot of times you'll be using computers to catch the bad guys." Abby described some of the programs. "Setting up crime scene analysis, tracing emails, tracking GPS, following bank accounts. That sort of thing."

Pointing out a stack of laptops, she grinned. "These are loaded up with every sort of forensic tool you'll need. Broots, Mac and Lucas? I'll be counting the laptops before you leave so don't get any ideas."

Zero followed a GPS tracer around Miami. Whee!

Alphonse began to fret a little, since he had very, very little idea on how to use a computer. He took a seat with a laptop somewhere and stared at it a bit before he started poking around on it with a hesitant finger. Then maybe, just maybe, he'd figure out the darn thing...

After finally getting the hang of one of the programs, Will looked up from her own computer to notice a familiar face with a confused look. She leaned over in her chair.

"Hey Al. Need some help?"

Alphonse looked up from his concentrating (whether or not he was attempting to will the thing to work itself was anyone's guess), relieved to hear the offer. "Oh, hi Will," he said, looking a little sheepish. "... Yeah, I think I do."

She wheeled her chair over to be closer to Al and his computer. "Well, for starters, how much do you know about computers? Someting? Nothing?" She smiled at him. "Everybody has to start somewhere. It gets easier with practice."

"Umm," Alphonse scratched the side of his head in thought. "I know a little," he answered. "I was shown a few things a while back, but I don't think it was anything fancy."

"All the programs on these have help files, so they shouldn't be too hard to learn to use." Will's eyes scanned the screen looking for an easy forensics program, before settling on the GPS tracker one.

"Try clicking on the icon that looks a little like a map. That one should be the easiest to use."

Alphonse nodded, dragging the mouse because touchpads are ew over to click the icon. Then inwardly beamed a little, since he was actually getting somewhere now. Once the new screen loaded up, he skimmed over what was on. "GPS..." Alphonse read aloud, frowning slightly; well, now there was even more lingo he didn't get, but that didn't keep him from continuing to look.

"It's a tracking system," Will explained. "The police have ways to track people through chips in their cars, or cellphones, or whatever. I think there should be a couple sample numbers loaded into the program."

Re: Computer thread

"Ooooh," Alphonse sounded impressed by that. "So, anything with those chips can be traced?"

John fired up a copy of Knoppix and poked through the files, seeing if there was better files to take for his personal use there were banking records in the spreadsheets or files still in the deleted folder in the e-mail that might be of use.

Parker was glaring at the laptops. And thinking she really needed to learn this crap just so *she* isn't hacked again. She looked around for Broots to help her out with it.

Broots saw Parker looking around and went to sit by her. "Hey. Sorry about my sister."

Re: Computer thread

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Parker snorted. "Cam is very, very lucky I graduate in two months, and probably won't see her again after that. Is she naturally oblivious to danger, or did your parents drop her on her head as a child?"

[identity profile] dorky-broots.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
"I always figured the later, but I guess the former might also be true. My theory was that she didn't have anything to get damaged when dropped to begin with."

Re: Computer thread

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Hmmph. I don't know whether to be glad or sad she won't expect her death until I decapitate her with a shoe." Parker pointed at the computer. "How do I set up a firewall even more unbreakable than the one you put on mine?" She glared at the software. "I mean, *completely*."

"Please don't kill my sister, my parents will mind, she's their favorite. And what happened to mine?"

Re: Computer thread

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Your parents are dumb," Parker said cordially. "And fine. For now. Grr." She sighed, then rubbed her eyes. "Jarod got... concerned. And felt the need to invade my computer in order to reassure himself. He said to tell you thanks for 48 hours of sleeplessness."

"No they're not! And only two days? Guess it wasn't that good. Want me to poke it now or later?"

Re: Computer thread

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-03-22 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Fine, they're not. But she shouldn't be their favorite." Parker scowled. "And later will be fine. He's not going to try again soon. And give yourself credit, you *know* what he's like. Two days is probably a record for a firewall holding out against an assault from him."

Will booted up the computer, and started playing around with a DNA analysis program. It took three or four read-throughs of the help file, but she finally managed to match a sample strand to something in the database.

Zack totally wasn't cackling as he started playing "track the mass emails about Alec", nope.

Lana focused intently, trying out all the different programs and discovering she actually wasn't too bad at this.

Oh, this was fun. Rikku tried out a few of the programs - the GPS tracker apparently did map things, and the DNA one ... whoa.

Then she started using the bank programs to track money and see if she could find out anything interesting about the fake accounts there.

Abby might just have to kick her out when the class period ends, or she'll just sit here playing.
