Revolutions: Week 9 Period 5

Aly was perched on top of her desk again as she watched the students come into the classroom.

"I hope you didn't miss me too much last week though it sounds like Bridge was an excellent substitute."  She grinned at Bridge.  "I'm sorry to say I don't have pie for you all.  Hopefully you won't hold it against me."

"Today we're going to switch things up a bit.  This whole semester we've focused on what it's like from the revolutionaries' standpoint. But I spent the past week in my country looking at things from a different angle - from that of the reigning government."

"So today, in small groups or pairs, I'd like you to react to a scenario as you would if you were the government of a country.  Go in with all your guns blazing, try to talk to the dissidents, infiltrate them, try to capture them and ship them off into exile, it's up to you.  Once you decide a plan of attack, I'm going to tell you how the revolutionaries react to your plan and you can respond once more."

"I'm sorry to tell all you strictly democratic souls, but today, you're all representatives of a monarchy.  Your intelligence service has brought information to you of a lost 'true heir' to the throne being spoken about in the streets.  A coalition of mainly merchants - your middle class - has started to form around this supposed heir, and the people of the streets seem to be turning towards that banner."

She grinned.  "You all have quite good instincts from the stirring things up side, let's see how you do when your objective is order in your country.  Any questions?"

Irulan thought about it -- if a House would actively rebel against the Golden Throne, how would she react? First, of course intelligence. She would gather all the information she needed about the opposing House then slowly coopt whatever support it had by relentless propaganda and if it comes to it, and it will. She would order an attack against the opposing House, force them to react in such a way that would inflict maximum damage on the public as to dismiss any thoughts that the rebels were 'martyrs' or heroes and once all favor turns to her side again, she would have them quietly executed.

Sam was thinking that the easiest and most orderly thing to do would be to appoint a liaison until the heir could be trained to be an effective ruler, and then ease him or her into position.

"Hey," D greeted as she slipped into a chair near by.

"Hey," Sam smiled at D'anna, "Feeling better?"

"Yeah, thanks." D grinned a little and nodded. "You doing alright there?"

She shrugged and doodled a bit on her notebook. "Yeah. Last week was just rougher than most."

D tilted her head to the side and raised an eyebrow, "in what way? ...I mean, other than the way I know about."

"Well, I was sick, but primarily it was because Isabel was gone and Jack and Cedric were arguing," she admitted. "Nothing directly involving me, but there was some emotional fallout." Plus there was her still undecided future to worry about.

"Oh, don't worry about it, D'anna," Sam tried to reassure her, "it came on quickly and is settled now. Besides, you have your own things to adjust to and that require your attention."

"I had no idea any of that was happening. I am so sorry Sam, is there anything I can do? Belated I know, but still..." D frowned. She was totally in the running for one-of-the-suckier-friends-of-the-year awards. "'Sides, if Jack and Cedric were arguing, that probably put you smack in the middle. Not a fun place to be."

Alec doodled on a piece of paper and glanced around to see if anyone wanted to pair up.

Parker's wondering what would happen if various facts came to light at the Centre. And how that would effect her position.

1. Investigate heir's claims...

Tyler took a seat near Parker. "Want to work together?"

"Sure. How do you want to approach this? I was thinking infiltration, but I'm open to ideas."

Re: [Rev 3-13] Activity

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2007-03-14 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
"Two fronts," Tyler said immediately. "Infiltration is one, but for the public face, have some negotiations going on, trying to reach consensus while picking their brains. And someone else should be in the background with a whisper campaign against the heir."

Re: [Rev 3-13] Activity

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-03-14 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
"I like it," Parker said approvingly. "For one thing, the middle class wouldn't be up in arms if they didn't have some problem with the current government. We need those guys. So we find out what the issue is, and get it resolved, so the heir doesn't have a platform to build from. Infiltration for that, and negotiations to settle it, if at all possible." She frowned, thinking. "Hmmm. Who do we want to do this? Civilian spies? Military?"

Re: [Rev 3-13] Activity

[identity profile] tyler-gone.livejournal.com 2007-03-14 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
"What if we used spies to infiltrate, and then the military for negotiations?" Tyler suggested. "But there's always the possibility of double agents, with spies."

"True." Parker frowned, then shook her head. "I think it's the best option, though. And yeah, military for a show of strength, in case some hothead wants to start the revolution early. Pay our spies really, really well, and make sure that we double-check them against each other."
