Traditional Fairy Tales, Class Nine (03/12)

Monday, March 12, Period 2

There was fine array of breakfast pastries and cookies laid out for the students today, along with plenty of hot drinks and juices. As soon as everyone was assembled, Aziraphale stood up from his chair and smiled.

"First, I want to remind you all that we will be taking our class field trip this weekend. The buses will load at the causeway on Friday at 3:00, and we'll return Sunday night. I'd like to ask anyone who cannot attend to please let me know, otherwise I will expect to see you all there. Now, I'll need to see the following people after class to collect your absence excuses."

DISCUSSION: "Today we're going to have an open discussion to allow you all the chance to ask questions about the readings or the lectures, or to share your ideas about the material we've covered. Next week we'll be having a test on 'Themes', so this might be a good time to review that material as well."

Jack doubted his reason for skipping class last week was going to go over well. "Professor Azriphale?" he asked. "I missed class last week. I don't actually have a good reason."

Aziraphale raised an eyebrow at Jack. He figured there was always a reason, good or not.

"Well, Mr Harkness, I suppose that everyone is allowed one absence without excuse. Be certain to get the notes from someone, and you may want to find a classmate to discuss last week's exercise with."

"Really?" Jack was very surprised. "Thanks. I will. And, ah, I do have an excuse, but it's just not a very good one." He waved a hand in the air. "Just personal stuff and a very bad weekend."

"Quite a few people seem to have had a difficult few days last weekend," Aziraphale replied. Then his lips quirked in a little smile, and he added, "If your conscience felt it necessary to do a bit of extra credit to make up for your absence, I wouldn't try to talk you out of it."

Jack laughed. "That's very gracious of you," he replied, still chuckling. "I'll have a talk with it, see if we can come up with something."

River looked a little less happy when she spoke to Aziraphale. "Can't go on the trip this weekend. Have to visit my brother ~~and the mun is going away for the weekend, woe~~." Much as she was looking forward to seeing Simon, he could have chosen a better time to pick her up.

"Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that," Aziraphale replied, looking sad. "Although I'm certain you'll enjoy visiting with your brother, I know how much you miss him. Is there a souvenir I can bring back for you?"

A smile appeared on River's face. "Only if you find something special," she said. "I'm sure I'll get to hear all the stories afterwards." Only it would have been much more fun to experience it first hand.

"I'll see if I can find something interesting for you," Aziraphale replied, smiling in response to River's smile. "Tell your brother I said hello, if you would. And do have a safe trip."

"I will. Thank you." She'd really miss going with them.

Marie approached Phale after class. He might notice that she was back to wearing clothes that completely covered her and gloves. He might also notice that her aura was normal again.

"Do you have a minute?"

Aziraphale did notice, and he frowned a bit. He was still feeling awfully sheepish about the way he'd acted in Wilson's office, and that showed in his expression.

"Of course, my dear. What can I do for you?"

"I just wanted to tell you that you were right last week," Marie said. "There was something off about me. I didn't learn how to control my powers, I accidentally switched powers with another boy that goes to school here."

"Oh, I am so sorry!" Aziraphale's frown deepened, but it was now one of concern for Marie's predicament. "If there's anything I can do to help, either with your meditation training or...just anything, I hope you'll tell me."

"Thanks," Marie said. "I'm going to keep doing what the Professor taught me over spring break and see what happens."

John dropped by on his way to Sparky's to talk to 'Phale.

"Mr Connor," Aziraphale said. "What can I do for you?"

"I, uh, I've been talking to Liz," he started, not sure how best to explain this. "And she's been in the clinic, so, that's why she's missed last week's class. And today."

"Oh dear," Aziraphale replied. "I do hope she's all right. Or, er...at least as all right as one can be in the clinic. If you see her, tell her that of course her absences are excused. And..."

He rummaged on the table next to his chair, and handed John a small tin of tea. "Here you are. Perhaps a bit of tea will help her to feel better."

"It might. Tea is supposed to help with everything. She... she has a power that got away from her. She's afraid, and... I was wondering if you could talk to her?" He takes the tea tin; he'll give it to her later at the clinic if she's still there.

"Aziraphale?" Angela ventured. "Sorry for missing the last class. I sprained my ankle and my mom made me stay home."

"Good morning, Miss Chase," Aziraphale replied. "I am sorry to hear about your ankle. Of course you're excused, especially if your mother insisted on you staying home. Which she was absolutely right to do. I hope you're doing better now?"

"Pretty much," Angela said. "The rain wasn't fun, but I seem to be doing better."

"I must admit, I mostly stayed indoors this weekend. I am glad it's over, though, things were getting awfully soggy. I hope you'll be feeling well enough to come on the trip this weekend?"
