Gun Club, noon

It wasn't like there was a lot to do outside anyway. So Parker posted the rules, and opened up the range.

SAFETY RULES:

· TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED

· KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE

· BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND

· ALWAYS WEAR HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION

· NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING.

· CHECK IN ALL WEAPONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RANGE.

"Well, not except for the shotgun in Hunting class, no," Sokka answered, looking down at his feet. "But the one-handed ones look more fun."

Parker raised an eyebrow, and said, "It is fun, but it's very dangerous too. So you are going to do exactly as I say, or I'll beat you to death with a pair of ear muffs. Understood?"

"We're surrounded by weapons, and you're threatening me with ear muffs?" Sokka asked. "Yeah, I'm listening, but are you sure you know what you're doing?"

"Believe me, I could make them hurt longer and cause much more trauma." She gave him a stern look, then relented, pulling out a pair of earmuffs, and eye protectors. "For one things? These are what I'm referring to. A bit more solid than earmuffs to keep your ears warm. You have to wear them when you're in here, or you'll lose hearing from all the gunfire. The microphon on there allows us to talk to each other. The shades are to protect your vision-- we haven't had an accident yet, but I don't want to start. Works?"

Sokka smiled and snatched them up. "Sounds good." He smiled, and then looked at her before putting them on. "You're not going to go all 'you must learn to be one with your weapon before you're allowed to kill things' on me, are you? I get to shoot today?"

Parker smirked, then concealed a cough, remembering various conversations with Jack on the subject of 'weapons.' "No, no. You get to shoot today. I'm just being like this so you don't shoot yourself. Or anyone else. If we waited until you were one with your weapon, well... uh, never mind." She unloaded a 9mm and handed it over to him. "Take a look at it, and get familiar with it. This is a 9mm. It's a semi-automatic-- it keeps shooting as long as you press the trigger and have ammo, you don't need to re-cock it in between shots."

"So, you just aim and push this thing?" Sokka asked, gesturing at the trigger. "Does it have any 'ammo' right now?"

"No. This," she held up the cartridge, and turned it so he could see the bullets, "is the ammo. You pull back this slide," Parker pulled it back to expose the firing chamber, "To check if there's any bullets left in there after you remove the cartridge. Always, always do this when you put it away. And before you start firing it. The last thing we want is a dropped gun firing and shooting someone accidentally." She re-loaded the gun, then gave it to him. "Show me that you understand how I unloaded it."

Sokka turned the gun over and around -- doing his best to keep it pointed at the floor in front of him -- until he found the catch that released the cartridge. As it slid out, he looked up at Parker proudly. THEN he remembered to pull back the slide and check the chamber.

"Good," Parker said dryly. "Delayed, but very good. Now I can show you the rest." She took the gun back, reloaded it, and clicked on the safety. "It can't fire while this switch is clicked. Keep that in mind, and keep it on until you want to fire it." She lead him over to a shooting gallery. "First, you're going to watch me shoot, then, I'll tell you how. Pay close attention."

Parker settled her stance, got a good grip on the gun, sighted down the barrel, then fired three shots at the target, all within the inner ring, one in the bull's eye.

Sokka payed very close attention. He watched the gun excitedly, eager for his turn. "Nice," he said, when she had finished shooting. "Can I try now?"

"You can *hold* the gun now. And do what I say." Parker gave him the gun, and said, "Put you feet in the same position as mine. If you know any martial arts, it's probably familiar. It'll help you absorb the recoil."

"Of course I know martial arts," Sokka declared. He mimicked her stance and sighted down the barrel of the gun.

Parker carefully moved one hand upward on the end of the gun. "Spread out your fingers as much as possible. Again, this has got a huge kick to it. The farther up the grip you're holding it, the better off you are." She tapped the end of the gunbarrel. "There are sights here, at the end, and here." She tapped the sight next to the hammer. "Try to line them all up with the target. You won't be able to keep your eyes focused on all three for more than a few seconds. Then focus on the far sight, okay?"

She stepped back. "*Now* you can fire the gun."

Sokka happily aims the gun at the target and squeezes off three quick shots. The first one was close-ish to the center, and high -- used to much slower projectiles, Sokka overcompensated for the bullet's flight arc. The second and third bullets went wide, one hitting the edge of the target and the other missing the target completely. Sokka staggered a bit, completely unprepared for the amount of kickback coming from such a small device.

"Aaaand now we re-assess," Parker said dryly, bracing Sokka with one hand on his shoulder. "Put one hand underneath the gun. Like this." She demonstrated on her own weapon. "And take it slow. Roll your shoulders forward a little, to absorb the impact. You okay?"

"I'm fine," Sokka grumped. Still, he followed Parker's instructions.

"Boy, it's nothing like a bow, is it?"

"It's about a hundred times faster, in an area much smaller. The impact is correspondingly larger," Parker said, stepping away. "So yeah. Have you ever fired a crossbow? This is a lot closer, but it's still not very comparable."
