Gun Club, noon

It wasn't like there was a lot to do outside anyway. So Parker posted the rules, and opened up the range.

SAFETY RULES:

· TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY WERE LOADED

· KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL READY TO FIRE

· BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT’S BEYOND

· ALWAYS WEAR HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION

· NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILE SHOOTING.

· CHECK IN ALL WEAPONS BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE RANGE.

Parker nodded, quiet for a moment, then said, "Something happened out there. I'm sure of it. Maybe it was just the war. But she's not okay."

"No, she's not," he admitted, staring into his coffee. "It was a war. God knows what happened. And the Captain," Jack's lips tightened, "he said to be careful. Specifics would have been nice."

"Wouldn't they?" Parker glared at him a moment. "Grown-up you is a jerk fairly often. Don't be that guy, okay?" She sighed. "But she just got here, so... we can wait. Much as I dislike that option."

"Do my best. But he brought her back to us, that counts for a hell of a lot." He ignored the glare, figuring it wasn't directed at him, or at least not this version of him. "We can, but not forever, though."

Parker relaxed and said, "I doubt we'll have to. Once she's feeling better, is rested up, she'll probably tell us." I hope.

"I hope so," he said quietly. "I hope so." Shaking his head, he took a long sip of tea. "No point worrying about that yet." He touched the back of Parker's hand. "Thanks for calling Cedric for me."

"Of course. I would've done it in a minute or two when I thought of it, anyway. He's my friend too." She looked over at River again, then back at Jack. "I talked to River Thursday night. And got an invitation to visit her ship, sometime."

"Nice one," he said, grinning a little and this time not reacting at all to the mention of River. "I haven't managed to get one of those yet. You going to go?"

"Sometime. Hopefully before the end of the semester." Parker was quiet a moment, then added, "She might have picked up on some things from me. Just so you know. I'm getting better at keeping her out of my head, but... not perfectly so."

"Parker?" Jack lowered his cup and looked at her closely, curious and concerned. "What sort of things?"

"That you had an argument with Cedric." Parker shrugged helplessly. "She might have drawn her own conclusions."

"It wasn't an argument." Jack sighed and rubbed his forehead. "I don't know what it was. I managed to hurt him, and he wanted me to leave. I don't think that counts as an argument."

Parker sighed. "No. But anything else I would label it would just hurt worse." She shook her head. "How are you doing?"

"Honestly?" he asked. "Not great. Mostly trying not to think about it, because there's nothing I can do." Which he hated, being helpless and stuck, waiting to see what would happen. It was driving him nuts. "I promised I'd stay away."

Parker raised an eyebrow, having some idea how Jack might handle that. "And you're going to keep that promise, I know. Because it's Cedric, and you wouldn't hurt him twice in one week."

"Yeah, I am. That's why I made you call him," he said quietly. "He may never come, and if that happens, I'll deal."

"Ahh, Jack." Any impulse to give him a hard time always faded out when he was genuinely repentant. "It'll get better. Eventually." Parker sighed. "Never's a very long time."

"Never is eight weeks," he said bluntly. "That's it."

Parker had no response to that, because it took a hell of a lot longer than eight weeks to get her and Jarod speaking again. And Cedric had reason to be hurt, reason to want to avoid Jack. She reached out and squeezed Jack's hand for a moment, then let go. "I'll be around. If you need anything."

"I know. Thanks." He made an effort and smiled, shaking it off. "What about you? Any luck with the info we got?"

Parker froze for a second before she could shake it off, then replied in a mostly-normal voice, "Yes." She looked around and carefully added, "I'll tell you later, though." Maybe. She rubbed her eyes and wished she'd slept better.

His gaze sharpened, but he didn't push. "I'll come and find you later. You'll tell me then."

She probably would, if she didn't get enough rest to prevaricate. Although there wasn't much point in lying to Jack, of all people. "Okay. When I'm around." Parker nodded, though, and tabled that for later. "I might go out for a bit. Meet our new fishmeister. Just for laughs."

"That could be...interesting." He snickered, grateful for anything else to talk about. "My money's on you."

Parker grinned at him. "Great. Thanks for that vote of confidence. Let's see if Poseidon is more impressive than his nephew, anyway." She nudged his arm. "I'll talk to you later, Jack."
