Advanced Tactics, Tuesday, 7th Period
Students entered today to find an expansive hangar deck, with two different types of fighter craft prepped for flight. On one side were her own LACs, or Light Attack Craft, now carried on larger ships designed to act as an old-world aircraft carrier. On the other side of the deck, visible through a large window-port, were Mark II and Mark VI Vipers, lined up for catapult launch. In the center of the deck, chairs with small desks had been set up, and a viewscreen at the front of the formation. Professor Harrington stood before the viewscreen.
“Come in and have a seat,” she said as the students began filtering in. “I apologize for the lack of snacks today, but I didn’t think it was a good idea to offer you food and then a negative g-force flight lesson.”
Taking roll visually this time, she folded her arms across her chest, creasing the goldish-colored flightsuit she wore. Beside her, Nimitz glared up from the deck, clad in his custom battlesuit. Contrary to appearances, however, he had no intentions of going up in either fighter.
She continued the lecture after the bell rang. “To your left, you will see a series of LACs, otherwise known as Light Attack Craft. These are the rough equivalent to the fighter jets and Harriers seen in twentieth century military footage. Like any fighter, they are more maneuverable than your average battlecruiser, but are not capable of faster-than-light travel. For that, they have to land aboard their carriers and are carted around from battle to battle.
“On your right, you will see a catapult with two different types of fighters, both of which are currently in use by thesurvivors of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. The white fighters are an earlier flight, known as the Mark II. They were designed and used by the Colonies in their war with the Cylons. They are, therefore, designed with many analog gauges and controls, allowing the craft to be piloted without computers if necessary.
“The sleek grey fighters you see are the Mark VII Viper. Developed twenty years later, these are the most recent of the Colonial craft. They are more agile than their predecessors, but more computerized. They are, therefore, more susceptible to electromagnetic pulse attack or targeted viruses.”
Adjusting the sleeves on her flight suit, Honor continued. “Each unit – both LAC and Viper alike – are set up for training mode. This means that they will remain in simulator mode until you achieve a passing score on the following items: take off, maneuvering, fighting, and landing. If you don’t make it into the ‘air’ today, we’ll be taking part of the class next week to complete the training.”
"And yes," she added, "you can fight each other, rather than the computer, if you'd like. The heads-up display will provide you with that option."
She reached down and picked up her helmet, along with the machined aluminum collar which docked the gear to her suit. “All comm units are linked, so if you have any questions, just ask. And you are free to chatter among yourselves. Just...pay attention to where you’re flying.” Honor grinned. “Now, have at. I'll see some of you in the Vipers.”
