Sociology of Space Travel, Thursday, 6th Period

Laura had thought her days of pulling all-nighters ended when her doctorate had been granted. Instead, she found herself awake into the early morning hours, drawn into the Space Battles trilogy written by Timothy Zahn Thomas Zeit. She had watched the movies throughout the week. The book, she found, offered a greater range of characterization that she enjoyed immensely. When she finally ceded to sleep around three, she made a mental note to pass on copies to Bill the next time she visited.

Now, waiting for the class to arrive, she stifled a yawn as she stood at the front of the classroom. Her hands cradled a steaming cup of coffee and she offered the students a weary smile as they filed in. She could only be glad that whatever problem there had been with the heating system seemed to have been repaired; today the coffee was there only to keep her awake, not warm.

Her eyes darted to the clock as it ticked over. “Okay. This week, we move into space travel in popular culture – usually presented in the forms of science fiction or fantasy. Given that I’m not from around here” – she paused, passing a disarming smile – “I’m willing to bet you are much better experts on pop culture than I am. That’s why, when we last met, I asked you to put together a list of your favorite science fiction movies and books. We can’t exactly go through every item on every list so, for the sake of discussion, I’d like each of you to pick one item on your list, and give a brief summary to me, and to the class. Who wants to start off?”

Roslin waited a moment for someone to jump in. Once the discussion started, she asked a few questions here and there, but allowed the students to dominate the conversation. She eventually steered the conversation in a different direction. “So, in discussing all of this,” she said slowly, “what are some of the common themes we see emerging through all these different stories? Do you think the stories reflect the society that produced them?”

The conversation continued for a little while, until the class drew to a close. The bell rang, and she had to shout to be heard over the noise. “There will be videos available in the library again this week. Make sure you take an hour or so to go over and check them out. I think you’ll find them both enlightening and entertaining. See you Thursday after next! Enjoy your break!”
