"I hold the throne," Kivar replied smoothly. "I believe you have an expression here? About possession being the law?"

"Yes, but if you possess something and you stole it you're still a thief." A fact Z knew well. "Of course, I don't know enough about the situation to say if anyone stole anything. Which is why I'm asking for more details."

"The previous ruler was a bit of a free thinker," he said, steepling his fingers together. "He decided that change was needed. Unneccessary change at that. It set off a war that ultimately resulted in his death. Unfortunately that didn't end the war as a few misguided fanatics insist on fighting in his name in the vain hope that somehow he'll return to save them one day."

"That everyone has their place in society. Their own specific role to fill. Confusion in roles can cause upheavel, turmoil. It would be bad for a society," he explained.

"That would be a part of it," Kivar nodded. "Although if you show the right apptitude there's always room for advancement. But I was refering more to gender roles."

Man, there was nothing quite like insular aliens. "Obviously not everybody agrees with that, though, or you wouldn't have had a war," Z pointed out.

"The war began because an idiot boy decided he knew what was best," he replied, showing the slightest bit of temper. "It continues because of misguided fanatics and the interference of other planets in our system. If Zan had not been such a fool, none of this would have happened."
