Superheroing- Tuesday, February 20- 2nd period

Captain Liberty is clearly not in a very happy mood when class starts. "So I'd like to share a little tip with all of you on how to protect your secret identity: DON'T BE FIVE. That being said, anyone who brings this weekend up to me is getting soooo much detention. Now pass up your homework.

"Now," she continues, passing around a handout. "This was supposed to be next week's lesson, but I switched it. Because I wanna. So there are going to be times that you don't come off looking so good in the press. And the fact is, the press is really important. You look in any newspaper and they're going to report all the crimes. There are even police blotters detailing arrests. Studies are done on statistics, there are sociology reports on crime... Really, you get into crimefighting and you're putting yourself out there. Even if you're not really in the public eye, people will watch what you do, and there'll always be one person complaining that what you did was wrong or not good enough, and they'll be the most vocal. Sucks, huh? Now just imagine what would happen if they found out something more personal about you, like, randomly, say pictures in a men's magazine. It can even be something way smaller than that. Something you wouldn't even normally notice. You have to find a way to deal with it without damaging yourself or your reputation. Worse, at least.

"What you've got in front of you is a list. You've all been randomly given a prompt, something you've gotten in trouble for with the press. Now, these aren't all things that would happen while fighting crime. To be honest, I kind of just went through In Touch magazine and swiped stuff that happened to celebrities. Just run with it, it's only practice. You're going to pair up, one of you playing a reporter who's quizzing a superhero about this horrible thing that happened or didn't happen but it's in the newspapers anyway. Once you've either come to a reasonable conclusion, switch places. Any questions? Good."

"That sounds like a nickname Jaye would give someone," John said. "She's good for that kind of stuff."

"Actually it was the talking cat," Peter said. "Though I may earn new ones from Jaye before the semester's out."

"Ah, Faithful," John said with a nod. "Snarky cat."

"Got it in one," Peter said. "So do you want to report first or be questioned?"

"I'll question you first," John volunteered.

"Okay, lemme get into character," Peter said. He squared his shoulders, ran a hand through his hair, and then looked at John as though he was already bothered by the questions John hadn't asked yet. If John knew Peter's family he'd realize this was Peter's attempt at imitating Nathan. "Go for it."

John stretched his neck a few times and then took on the look of a reporter.

"So, this must be a very trying time for you, isn't it?"

"I support my brother 100%," Peter said. "Most especially through this difficult time in his life."

John nodded and pretended to tap a pencil against his chin. "Is your brother all right? How's he doing?"

"As well as he can, all things expected," Peter said, doing his impression of Nathan's 'I am expressing empathy now' face. "It's a difficult thing to get arrested for public indecency with a chicken but he understands that he has inner demons he needs to face."

"And this doesn't upset you?" John asked. "This lack of respect for your public image?"

"I would much rather be known as the guy who supported his brother in his time of need," Peter said. "My love for my brother is unconditional."

"Even though you're going to be known as the brother of the person who liked chicken enough to do that in public?"

"It could be argued that by starting the incident off with a poem of his own making was showing his sensitive side," Peter pointed out.

"But...a chicken?"

"Are you implying there's something wrong with my brother's fondness for dark meat?"

"I'm not," John said. "But of all things, a chicken?"

"Would you rather he picked a duck?" Peter asked. "Because I don't think anyone wants to hear poems about what that rhymes with."

"Why in public though?"

"He's very outgoing."

"The privacy of one's home seems better suited for chicken related antics," John said.

"He's starting to understand that now," Peter said. "Thankfully he'll be learning a lot about that while he's in Leghorn House."

John nodded. "Will chickens be part of his recovery?"

"I think the best thing right now is to leave the details of his rehab between him and his therapists," Peter said.

Another nod. "I do wish him the best in his recovery and hope he can come through this a better man."
