Conflict Management and Resolution: Mon Period 4 - Class # 7 - Feb 19

The Danger Room: Mid-Term Exam

Through the power of Fandom handwavey communication systems, Wilson’s Conflict Management students were informed that their mid-term would be held in the Danger Room today. As they all filed in, Wilson was standing there waiting for them. He was, blessedly, no longer wee and after an hour long scrub in the second bathroom at the house, he also no longer had jam in his hair.

These were good things as far as he was concerned, thankyouverymuch.

“Good morning.” He said, arms crossed as he leaned back against a wall.

“Well, despite this weekend’s shenanigans I already had the midterm set up and the program ready to run for today’s mid-term assignment so, I hope you’re all ready.”

Reaching down into his briefcase he pulled out a handful of manila envelopes.

“The Danger Room has been sectioned off to 18 sections; you will all have the same scenario, detailed out in these folders. Please do not open the folder until you have entered the room with your name on it. This exam is designed to test your understanding of everything we have gone over in class to this point. The way you answer it maybe not be the same as your neighbor. Any questions?”

Looking around at the group, Wilson waved them towards the sectioned off room and began to hand out the envelopes.

“Good luck guys.”

The Exam:

As the students entered their rooms they saw a small table with three chairs, two of the chairs were at either end of the table and one sat in the middle. A Red flag and a Blue flag sat in front of the two opposing chairs. When the students sat down and opened their envelope two little Seusslike creatures appeared in either chair. One dressed in red and one in blue.

The exam read as follows: Welcome to the The Cream Cheese Battle. Please meet the Yuuks in blue and the Zuuks in red. They are two societies locked in a cold war of such over whether to cream cheese the top slice or the bottom slice of a bagel. They are so divided about this subject that they have rapidly escalated the production of the dreaded ‘bitsy big boomeroo’ in anticipation of going to war.

To date all attempts at peaceful negotiation have failed as neither side will yield on their stance about the cream cheese. This is a matter of deep cultural integrity on both sides and both leaders are very proud of their heritage in cream cheese application. Your assignment is to find a way to mediate a cessation of the production of the ‘bitsy big boomeroo’ weapon being developed by both. To do this you will have to address not only the production of this weapon and the potential for mutally assured destruction but also the root cause of the tensions between the Yuuks and the Zuuks and will no doubt need to provide them with both a short term and a long term solution to their difference of opinions.

Good luck!

[ooc: OCDs are on their way up! Have a nice exam!]

Image The Zuuk crossed his arms and turned his back on the Yuuk, but replied relatively politely to Pippi's greeting. "A good day to you, on behalf of the Zuuks."

Image Likewise, the Yuuk crosses his own arms and turned his back on the Zuuk. "A good day to you, on behalf of the Yuuks."

"So according to my materials, the disagreement is regarding the application of cream cheese to sliced bagels?"

Image "This is correct," the Zuuk representative answered. "Spreading cream cheese on the bottom slice is the Zuuk way. They spread their cheese wrongly, and will not change."

Image "The Yuuk way is right!" the Yuuk representative retorted. "The top slice is the right slice, and they do it all wrong!"

"I see... So The Zuuks believe the Yuuks should spread their cream cheese the way the Zuuks do. And the Yuuks believe the Zuuks should spread their cream cheese the way the Yuuks do... How long have your respective cultures been observing these practices?"

Image "Since the very first Zuuk bagel in the very first Zuuk house," the Zuuk representative explained. "It's always been done with the cream cheese on the bottom."

Image The Yuuk stuck his nose in the air. "Since the very first Yuuk bagel in the very first Yuuk house. The cream cheese goes on the top, it's always been done."

"I see. That's a very rich history on both sides. And when did the hostilities over these matters begin roughtly?"

Image Image The Zuuk looked at the Yuuk, and the Yuuk looked at the Zuuk. "We've always been right, and they've always been wrong," the two announced in unison.

"It's good that you agree at least that you disagree." Pippi said.

Image Image It was obvious that the Zuuk didn't like agreeing with the Yuuk, and the Yuuk didn't like agreeing with the Zuuk. But there was nothing they could do about that. So they glowered at Pippi, for pointing it out. And crossed their arms, and looked as stubborn as they could.

"Does knowing the other culture spreads their cream cheese on the other side make cream cheese and bagels affect the taste of your own?"

Image The Zuuk was silent for a moment, then said quietly, "No."

Image The Yuuk also was quiet, and then shook his head. "No."

"Does the fact that the Zuuks spread their cream cheese on the other side effect the cream cheese or bagel supplies of the Yuuks or vice versa?"

Image Image Again, both the Zuuk and the Yuuk shook their heads. "No," they both said.

And this time, both looked a bit sheepish.

"So the actions of one don't effect the supply of the other except that you're spending a bunch of time and money on developing a bomb instead of research and development for improvements to the production and design of cream cheese, spreading knives, bagel slicers, and bagels?"

Re: The Exam: Pippi Longstocking

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Image "You can make better spreading knives?" the Zuuk asked in surprise.

Image "And better bagel slicers?" the Yuuk added, intrigued.

"If you're smart enough to design a horribly destructive bomb, I think you might be just smart enough to design better spreading knives and bagel slicers... And this could also be a very fortuitous economic opportunity for you both."

Re: The Exam: Pippi Longstocking

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Image Image "We can make better spreaders!" the Zuuk representative exclaimed with excitement. "And better slicers!" the Yuuk representative added with glee.

"I think we have a breakthrough." Pippi smiled.

Image Image The Zuuks and Yuuks were so excited by the new ideas, for better slicers and spreaders and bagels and cheese, that they forgot all about their old conflicts over top slice or bottom slice. With great enthusiasm, they shook Pippi's hand and thanked her for her wisdom.

Pippi shook their hands gently and warmly and at the same time.

"I'm so glad we had this talk."
