Conflict Management and Resolution: Mon Period 4 - Class # 7 - Feb 19

The Danger Room: Mid-Term Exam

Through the power of Fandom handwavey communication systems, Wilson’s Conflict Management students were informed that their mid-term would be held in the Danger Room today. As they all filed in, Wilson was standing there waiting for them. He was, blessedly, no longer wee and after an hour long scrub in the second bathroom at the house, he also no longer had jam in his hair.

These were good things as far as he was concerned, thankyouverymuch.

“Good morning.” He said, arms crossed as he leaned back against a wall.

“Well, despite this weekend’s shenanigans I already had the midterm set up and the program ready to run for today’s mid-term assignment so, I hope you’re all ready.”

Reaching down into his briefcase he pulled out a handful of manila envelopes.

“The Danger Room has been sectioned off to 18 sections; you will all have the same scenario, detailed out in these folders. Please do not open the folder until you have entered the room with your name on it. This exam is designed to test your understanding of everything we have gone over in class to this point. The way you answer it maybe not be the same as your neighbor. Any questions?”

Looking around at the group, Wilson waved them towards the sectioned off room and began to hand out the envelopes.

“Good luck guys.”

The Exam:

As the students entered their rooms they saw a small table with three chairs, two of the chairs were at either end of the table and one sat in the middle. A Red flag and a Blue flag sat in front of the two opposing chairs. When the students sat down and opened their envelope two little Seusslike creatures appeared in either chair. One dressed in red and one in blue.

The exam read as follows: Welcome to the The Cream Cheese Battle. Please meet the Yuuks in blue and the Zuuks in red. They are two societies locked in a cold war of such over whether to cream cheese the top slice or the bottom slice of a bagel. They are so divided about this subject that they have rapidly escalated the production of the dreaded ‘bitsy big boomeroo’ in anticipation of going to war.

To date all attempts at peaceful negotiation have failed as neither side will yield on their stance about the cream cheese. This is a matter of deep cultural integrity on both sides and both leaders are very proud of their heritage in cream cheese application. Your assignment is to find a way to mediate a cessation of the production of the ‘bitsy big boomeroo’ weapon being developed by both. To do this you will have to address not only the production of this weapon and the potential for mutally assured destruction but also the root cause of the tensions between the Yuuks and the Zuuks and will no doubt need to provide them with both a short term and a long term solution to their difference of opinions.

Good luck!

"Okay, uh - so how about we go around the table and introduce ourselves?" Peter asked. "I'll start. My name's Peter and I'll be your mediator this evening."

Image The Zuuk representative quickly jumped in to speak on the heels of Peter's introduction. "I am Zoolaroo Zuuk, the Zuuk representative. And I am here because they spread their cream cheese on the wrong side."

Image The Yuuk representative glowered and sniffed. "I am Yoolaroo Yuuk, the Yuuk representative. And I am here because they spread their cream cheese on the wrong side."

"Uh-uh, uh-uh," Peter said. "Okay, I'm hearing the both of you on the cream cheese issue. Zoolaroo, you feel that the cheese should go on one side while Yoolaroo, you feel it should go on the opposite one. Am I getting that right?"

Image Image "Yes, that's exactly right," both the Zuuk and the Yuuk replied together in unison, crossing their arms and nodding.

"Good, I'm glad," Peter said. "Now if you could, one at a time, tell me what would be a good solution for the both of you? A solution other than changing the sides of your cream cheese. Zoolaroo, how about you go first?"

Image The Zuuk representative nodded haughtily. "Destroy all the top-slice-spreading Yuuks."

Image Not to be outdown, the Yuuk representative also replied, "Destroy all the bottom-slice-spreading Zuuks."

"I appreciate that you both wish you could wave magic wands and make the other side go away," Peter said. "But for fun let's play 'death is not an option.' Can either one of you think of a more peaceful solution that would make you happy? Yoolaroo, this time you get to go first."

Image The Yuuk seemed pleased to be called on first this time, and he sat up straight in his chair. "They can change their wrong-sided ways, and be like Yuuks, in spreaded their cream cheese on the top slice of the bagel. Then everyone would be the same and we could all live in peace."

Image The Zuuk glowered at having to go second, and glowered at the Yuuk's response. "Or they can change their ways and be like Zuuks, and spread their cream cheese on the bottom slice of the bagel. And then everyone would be the same and we could all live in peace."

"Seems like we've got some inflexibility on the cream cheese issue," Peter said. "So who's better known for being more diplomatic, Zuuks or Yuuks?"

Image "The Zuuks!" the Zuuk representative exclaimed. "We're the most diplomatic, but they won't listen to reason!"

Image "Not true!" cried the Yuuk representative. "The Yuuks are quite diplomatic, but they won't listen to reason!"

"Lemme float a suggestion," Peter said. "Is it possible for either of you to show off how good you are at diplomacy by eating bagels with cream cheese your way and not looking down on the other side for how they eat theirs?"

Image The Zuuk thought for a moment, pondering the suggestion. Then he straightened and nodded. "The Zuuks are proud of their diplomatic gifts. We can eat our bagels and be more diplomatic than they can."

Image The Yuuk, not wanting to be left behind, also sat up straight. "The Yuuks are far more diplomatic than they are," he said. "We will eat our bagels our way and be more diplomatic than Zuuks."

"See, only way I can believe that is if you guys put it into action," Peter said. "Think you can do it?"

Re: The Exam: Peter Petrelli

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2007-02-19 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Image Image "Of course!" they both cried, nodding emphatically. "We will eat our bagels more diplomatically than they will!"

Image Image The Zuuks and the Yuuks shook hands with Peter and then left, determined now to out-diplomacy one another by eating their bagels and leaving each other in peace.
