Science! (Thursday, Period 7)

"Gooooood afternoon, class!" Ms Frizzle greeted them cheerfully as she bounced and pirouetted into class, today's dress adorned with boulders of various shapes and sizes. "I apologise for last week, but now I'm back and I hope you're all ready for another field trip! We're starting our unit on geology, so everyone to the bus!"

The crust!

The bus headed out away from the school towards the part of the island classified by rocky bits. The Friz happily chattered away about the different types of rocks (http://www.promotega.org/ksu00006/types.htm) as she drove before picking an apparently random patch of ground to stop at and bounced up out of her seat.

Liz hit a button and the roof wooshed open, miners' helmets dropping from the ceiling like oxygen masks in a snake-filled plane. "Everyone grab a helmet and get ready to take chances! Make mistakes! And get . . . dirty! Hit it Liz!"

And as the Friz launched into a lecture about the earth's crust, the bus began to dig.

Mac snagged a miner's helmet and put it on, she got a little distracted from Ms Frizzle's lecture by boggling over the fact the bus could actually dig.

Sokka cracked up. He laughed, he howled, and eventually sighed it out of his system. "Rocky start. Heh." He chuckled a little more.

Valentine took a helmet and settled back, watching the dirt pile up around them.
He rather liked Science! class. It was probably the most normal class he was in this semester.

As with most of his time spent in this class, Lucas spent the trip through the crust slack-jawed and trying to figure out the scientific possibility of what was happening right now.

And making sure his helmet was on.

Hikaru grabbed a helmet he hoped would fit, considering finding some good sized rocks to chuck at Turtle's head. Though, that was a little too mean, even for him.

The mantle!

"Be careful, children!" Ms Frizzle said calmly yet cheerfully as the bus broke through the earth's crust. "We are now entering the mantle (http://library.thinkquest.org/10136/media/layers2.jpg). This is the highly volatile part of the earth that is constantly moving and changing and occasionally appears above ground as lava or magma. I hope the air conditioning works!"

Valentine wasn't sweating. Really.

Actually, the shifty glowy magma which my science geek self must clarify is just lava that hasn't appeared above the crust yet and there's no difference otherwise rather reminded him of home.

"There is an outer core and inner core of the earth!" Ms Frizzle continued, seemingly unaffected by the heat. "The inner core is much cooler and denser than the rest of the earth and is composed most of a nickel-iron alloy with a few elements that are unknown!"

Lucas was back with his face near the window, wondering how he could get a core sample to take some of these unknown samples back to the surface.
