Hunting 101 - Class 6 (Wednesday period 7)

When the students came into the Danger Room, they found John leaning against the by-now familiar black car, the main street of a small town behind him.

"Good afternoon," John said when they all had arrived. "First an announcement. I won't be having office hours tomorrow as something has come up and I need to go out of town for the weekend. If you have anything you need to discuss, you can see me after class or wait until my office hours next Tuesday.



"As promised last week, behind me is the town of Hume. As the information you were given tells you, recently two teenage girls -- Ashley Taggart age 15 and Valerie Brown age 16 -- died under identical mysterious circumstances. They were found dead in the town's dance studio after having been practicing alone. There was no signs of violence on the bodies, according to the autopsies, their hearts just gave out.

"This is typical of the kind of information a hunt starts with. So let's see what you can make of it. Your assignment is to find out what killed those girls and stop it. You paired off last week so go to it." He smiled at them. "Impress me."

Wyatt had checked his email earlier that day and found he'd missed the email from John yesterday about the mentoring meetings. Ooops. Hoping he didn't appear too hungover, because way to impress his teacher, Wyatt approached John after class. "Sorry I didn't stop by yesterday," he said. "I had a rough day Monday and didn't check my email yesterday at all."

"That's no problem, we can reschedule," John said, looking closer at Wyatt. "Are you all right?"

"Yeah," Wyatt said sheepishly. "The past couple of days have been pretty rough."

"Something you want to talk about?" John asked.

"I...went to hell and helped destroy the Source of All Evil," Wyatt said. He smiled weakly. "Do I get extra credit for that?"

"Quite possibly," John said wryly, then sobered. "That's the thing that had its claws into Bel?"

Wyatt nodded. "My mom and her sisters said a spell that vanquished him. The Source is gone."

"And Bel?"

Wyatt dropped his gaze. "He didn't make it. There was no other way. Believe me, I didn't like vanquishing my aunt's boyfriend."

"I'm sorry," John said heartfelt. "He was always a pain in the ass, but I liked him anyway."

"A lot of people did," Wyatt said. "I wasn't sure about the whole demon thing, but I know Aunt Phoebe loved him, and my mom trusted him. But we couldn't find any other way."

"It sometimes comes to that," John said soberly. "Sometimes a person is so far gone in possession or curse to be saved. Doesn't ever make it any easier knowing there's no choice."

Wyatt nodded. "Yeah," he said, frowning. "Guess it's good to learn that lesson early."
