Forensic Science, Wednesday 2/14, 5th period

There were wee heart lollipops alongside the lab coats this week as the students filed into the Danger shop. Abby was sitting on one of the lab counters, her pigtails held up with bright red fuzzy ties.

"Happy Valentines Day, guys! Eat your suckers during the lecture because you are not going to want to take them into the practical this week." Grinning at the students, she clapped her hands. "This week we're going to be using the forensic skills you've learned to find out what happened at a crime scene. The only catch is that you won't be the only people there this week. You'll be dealing with other departments, people who will be in charge, people who might mess up your crime scene. As always, you want to figure how what happened to the victim, but this week you're going to learn how to deal with firemen and cops. Cooperation is key, guys. You're an important part of the team so don't let them walk all over you...but don't get too uppity. They can throw you off the crime scene. Today that'll mean you get a lower grade but in the field it'll mean that you can't do your job and evidence could get lost or destroyed while they wait for a replacement."

Passing out handouts and messenger bags to each of the students, Abby talked a little about the tools that they'd find inside. A camera for crime scene photos, several evidence bags and vials, notebook and pens, and most importantly, identification. "Crime scenes can be like circuses and being the lab geek means that not everyone at the scene will know who you are. Unless you want to be tossed into the back of a police car, keep your ID on you at all times."

Opening the door of the lab, she ushered the students through. Instead of walking into the crime scene like usual, the scene was set outdoors. They stood in front of a burnt out shell of a house, still smoking in places as NPC firefighters crawled over it. The stench of burning wood was heavy in the air as Abby directed them to three firefighters who were waiting near the front door.

"Go get 'em!"

[ooc: OCD up! Go ahead and play!]

Pippi stands by the front door, acting like a tough-as-nails fire-person.

"Hey, Pippi." Parker tapped her Crime Scene Investigation ID on her lab coat, and coughed a little from the dissipating smoke. "Ready to guide me through the wreckage?"

Interestingly enough, Pippi, who had taken Jarod's "pretending" class, sort of based her tough-as-nails firefighter persona on Parker.

"Hey Parker." she said glancing at the ID. "Sure thing, it's still a little hot in there but it's safe enough. You got good shoes on?"

Parker held up a foot encased in a steel-toed boot. "I don't want anything breaking my toes in there. These work?"

"Yeah, that'll do. Here..." Pippi grabbed an extra turnout coat (http://www.projectresponder.com/images/emergency/GXtreme_jacket.jpg) and offered it to her. "The latest from Donatella Versache."

"Uhhh..." Parker took the coat, having the weirdest feeling of deja vu' as she struggled into it. "Thanks?"

"No problem." She nodded towards the door. "Let's go. Step where I step, it's a mess in there."

"Sure thing." Pippi's no-nonsense firefighter act had Parker grinning a moment, then carefully following along, conscious of not wanting to mess up the evidence.

"Unfortunately." Pippi said picking her way through the house. "we weren't able to get to the occupants in time. The windows in the house were open when we got here, and the bedroom door was also open. Which was good for us... less of a chance for a backdraft."

Pippi had watched Backdraft five times in preparation for this.

"But they couldn't get out themselves?" Parker started taking pictures as they approached the bedroom, making sure to get the bedroom door, and the charred surroundings.

That deja vu feeling? Not going away.

Pippi shrugged.

"Don't look at me Parker. I just put out the fires. You're the smart one." she said. "Body was already burned up when we got in there."

Parker blinked again at the tone and shrug, still not sure why it was familiar. "Okay, well, tell me where it's unsafe to step, and I'll shoot film around it. Do you know how the fire started yet?"

"We suspect the occupant was smoking in bed."

"Hey Pippi. Can I get to the crime scene?"

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Pippi turned a critical eye on Broots.

"Do you have your ID, good boots, and a turnout coat?" She asked looking him over.

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] dorky-broots.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Broots pulled out his ID. "One out of three?"

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
After checking his ID, Pippi pushed a turnout coat (http://www.projectresponder.com/images/emergency/GXtreme_jacket.jpg) and boots into his hands.

"Put those on, the fire's out but there's some hotspots in there still."

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] dorky-broots.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Broots akwardly put the coat and boots on. "Okay, lead the way."

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Pippi nodded and motioned Broots to follow her.

"Step where I step and keep close, we think there's some structural damage."

She lead Broots through the entry and the living room, pointing out where the firefighters entered the building and windows that had been open when they got there.

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] dorky-broots.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Broots followed Pippi and tried to look at everything she pointed.

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Pippi lets him know she's leading him to the bedroom where they discovered the body of a person and a cat.

Right about that time there was a creaking sound, Pippi reached out to grab the lapel of Broots' turncoat to yank him out of the way of falling debris.

[identity profile] dorky-broots.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Broots flailed and wound up falling back on to his butt. "Ow. Thanks. But ow."

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't mention it." Pippi nodded hauling him, gently, to his feet. She'd ask if he was okay, but he just said 'ow', so that pretty much covered it.

"Any questions?"

"Anything else you want to point out?"

Re: Firefighters

[identity profile] strongestgirl.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Pippi thought over what she'd already told him; windows were open when they got here, dead person and cat in the bedroom...

"Bedroom door was open when we got in here and found the body... Dead guy was burned up in bed... But you'll see more of that when you talk to the cops."
