Conflict Management and Resolution: Mon Period 4 - Class # 6 - Feb 12

There were no treats today, woe and Wilson stood in front of the desk looking more pensive and withdrawn than was his usual attitude but plotting a trip to the Underworld when you were already one short step up from being a demon snack on a regular basis could mess with a guy’s mood.

As the students came in and settled down in to class, Wilson looked up and managed a half smile before he pushed away from the desk and grabbed a stack of handouts.

“Good morning.”

Walking through the rows, he laid out the handouts.

Lecture:

“Today we’re going to be discussing Mediation. Now I don’t want to spend all our time taking notes, so I’ve worked up this handout for you so you can follow along while I hit the highlights but please be aware that all of this material has the potential to show up on your next test.”

Never hurt to give that warning!

“Okay, let’s all start at the top.”

Flipping on the overhead, Wilson began to work his way through the various sections on the handout. He gave particular emphasis to the mediation process but also paused to touch on making a career out of being a mediator and also the ethical responsibilities of being a mediator. As he’d warned he powered through the information so that there was plenty of time left for the class exercise.

Class Activity:

“All right so, today we’re going to get some practice in at being a mediator. I’ve broken you all in to groups of three, two sides of a conflict and a mediator. You can choose within your group who gets to be the mediator but I want an essay from all three of you about what sort of challenges the mediator faced and how they resolved the conflict. Everybody clear on that? Okay, here are your groups.”

[ooc: I know we all have varying amounts of availability. If you don’t have all three members of your group being active, try to focus on the mediator RP side of things. You all have all week to fiddle with this. :)]

"Thanks." Tori smiled. "Honestly? No, I don't think they're all bad. Just depicted that way." She admitted.

"Well, I'm calling dibs on the haunted-house ban side of the argument," Conner told her, because occasionally he was thoughtless like that. "You guys can duke it out for who gets to mediate or take the pro-haunting argument."

Tori chuckled. "Sure thing." She smiled and looked to Layla. "I really don't mind which position I get."

"Well, I really like haunted houses, so I'm willing to take the pro-haunting side," Layla said.

"Okay, great. So that leaves me to be the mediator." Tori nodded. "Sounds good to me." She smiled.

"You were probably used to that role anyway," Conner teased her. He shuddered a little at the thought of haunted houses.

Tori chuckled. "Yes I was. With five boys constantly getting into trouble and the like? Definitely." She smirked and looked at her group members. "It was fun being the only girl." Tori shook her head, amused. "Okay, so, the assignment. Would either of you like to start?"

"I can start," Layla offered. "I don't think haunted houses should be banned just because a few people had a bad experience with one. There are lots of other people who like them, not just me."

"Even after being here in Fandom?" asked Conner. "What if more of them are really real haunted houses, with, like, actual monsters trying to eat kids, than people realize?"

Tori listened to them intently. She felt no need to say anything yet. They were conversing calmly and making valid points for both sides.

"Then those houses can be shut down. But there are still normal haunted houses that don't have children-eating monsters in them," Layla insisted. "What about all the people who run those kinds of haunted houses, and need the money they get from ticket sales and snack sales?"

Okay, Conner had to admit she had a point there -- with his plans for a kids' soccer camp, he knew the pain of fundraising. Still, in the interest of looking like he was putting actual effort into the discussion, he persisted.

"But what if they're raising money for evil?"
