The classroom is blaring with music and it's a jumble of music. As soon as everyone's seated, Rose turns the music down.

"Have I got your attention? Can anyone guess what we're going to discuss today? And no, Mr. Anders, it is not football or any sort of sport. At least, not today. If you say music well you got that a right! Pop music to be exact!"

"Now, see, pop music isn't just the ones we see Britney and her posse belt out but it's broad enough a genre to include a lot of things. Rock, country, dance, techno -- in fact, back then, Frank Sinatra " Sinatra's music's blaring in the speakers now and Rose shuts it off after a few rounds of 'New York, New York' "was considered pop. Amazing, don't you think? The sixties roll on and now pop music has changed into what we now consider classics bands like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel break into the scene extending into the seventies creating a disco scene. Think clubs only with scary hair and scary outfits, which of course would bring in the Big, Big, Big mentality of the eighties. This would, of course, usher in the Kings and Queens of Pop -- Madonna and Michael Jackson.

The nineties saw the coming of the boy and girl bands, most popular of all are the Spice Girls (from the old country, don't hurt me, please) and Backstreet boys, from well, this country. " Rose began passing around handouts on pop music.

"Pop music isn't just limited to western sensibilities, other countries have taken the elements of pop music -- songs about love or dancin' , usually all memorable melodies that some times never leave your head-- and made it into their own like Japanese Pop or J-pop, Korean pop or K-pop, etc.

I want you lot to discuss this and tell me what you think of this genre of music, quite popular these days too."

Henry's hands did nearly go to his ears. The sounds coming out of those speakers are definitely not music. He can maybe recognize a set of drums in there, but apart from that, it's just a mess.

Ami bopped along to the music

Anders -- who didn't look in the least bit disappointed that they weren't talking about sports, really, that was just a trick of the light -- sort of bobbed his head in time with the music. He liked the Sinatra; the rest of the stuff wasn't really his thing.

Why you're listening to some godawful music and no, she doesn't look like a certain singer from Britain. It's your demmed imagination.

Henry raised his hand.
"Does no one ever listen to baroque or classical any more?" He looked a little worried. "Or even Gilbert and Sullivan?"

Rose grinned, "Well, there are those rare folk who do, won't be seeing much of those in the younger set though, sorry."

If Ami was the kind of student who called out in class, she would totally be calling Rose on the fact that she was young and listened to that kind of stuff.

Rose saw Ami's expression, "Go on, Ami, you've another opinion why don't you tell us?"

"Oh. "Well, I was just going to say that there are plenty of young people who enjoy classical music as well as the pop music."

"Well, then I'm glad to hear that," Rose said, "I haven't ran across that lot yet but I'm glad they do exist. I didn't like classical music or any sort outside the music I knew then I started travelling and my views on that has changed. Personally, I love Glen Millers works."

"I am a fan of Mozart myself...."

Rose grinned, held out her hand and said, "Well, then Ami Mizuno, fan of Mozart, pleased to meet you!"

Henry nodded. It looked like he'd have to get used to this noise.
Either that, or keep his radio tuned into Debussy at all times.

"But, you should try out some jazz sometime, mellow music and all. Although during the early 1920s they were considered to be risque, only because it was a change."

Really, no resemblance at all.
