Sociology of Space Travel, Thursday

Professor Roslin is standing at the front of the room, bundled in a coat, her hands cradling a steaming cup of hot tea. On the desk beside her are the graded essays. She glanced at her watch quickly, then began speaking.

"Okay... Come in, grab your essays and look them over. If you have any questions, please see me after class." A taut smile flickered across her lips. "Once again, I'm going to have to apologize for the temperature of the room. According to maintenance, the heater is working... just not very well. As a result, we'll have another short class today."

Laura paused, taking a careful sip of her tea. She smirked a bit as the steam fogged up the lenses of her glasses. "So far, we've talked about alien behavior and the Terran space race. Now, the Terran space program has, thus far, been limited only to short flights; they have yet to launch manned missions to Mars, the Outer Rim, and other places. Part of this, I'm sure we all realize, is that they're not aware there really is life out there. But what other limitations do you think hold back Human exploration of space?"

After a few moments of discussion, she pressed on. "I mentioned a few moments ago, that Humans -- at least here -- aren't generally aware there's life beyond the known universe. Do you think this limits their imagination, or feeds it?"

She allowed the students to talk about that thought, then nodded, glancing at her watch. "Okay, we're going to go ahead and wrap up. For next week, I want you to make a list of your favorite books and movies. Once you do that, make note of how many relate to space flight or travel. Bring the list -- and your notes -- with you to class."

"Now," she said, pausing to sip her tea, "go defrost. See you next week."

[Sorry for the later post. We had a VIP -- with emphasis on the V-I -- visit today, and the office has been it total disarray. OCD threads coming up.]
