Popular Culture [Monday, February 5, 7th period]

There were all manner of food with nameplates arranged on the table together with plates, colas, plastic cups and paper napkins. Rose grinned at her students.

“We’re going to be discussing about food. Specifically, Fast food. Brief history for you lot, Fast food is a type of ready to eat food typically found in, you guessed it – Fast food restaurants. Developed in the early 1900s and developed to perfection for our current consumer society.

“We begin with drinks, one of the most popular drinks in this day and age are colas, or soft drinks, these are sweetened carbonated drinks made with caffeine. Caffeine is, can be found in  coffeebeans or leaves, it's a stimulant for your brain, reason why coffee's sweet life blood for any person wanting to be or stay awake for a long, long time. Coffee's also turned into something everyone can share and turn into some sort of social event, hence the popularity of coffeehouses or cafes even in tropical countries."

Rose pointed to the one opened box of pizza and a whole basket of  burgers. “Pizzas -- originated in Italy and really are fantastic things to eat for any occasion, although, don’t try eating it while you’re in Zero gravity, it’ll just be messy. Hamburgers or burgers is a sandwich with meat patty, lettuce tomatoes, cheese and all sorts of lovely garnishes. Very greasy, bad for the health if consumed too much, much like anything in life.

Hotdogs are also wonderful and better consumed with sandwiches garnished with relish, mayonnaise and ketchup.” Rose pointed out each garnish on the table then paused before a dish with fries and fried fish. “And this, folks are my favorite – Fish and chips. Chips, or as Americans call it, French Fries. Perfect food, in my opinion for anything that ails.  But, it is nothing, compared to ice cream. " Rose took a scoop of strawberry ice cream and placed it in  her cup. "Ice creams  are  frozen  dairy, eaten as dessert.  Frozen desserts have actually been around for  4,000 years  but, it was the Chinese who invented ice cream."

She grinned and took a spoonful of ice cream and ate it. "Don't you just love the Chinese? Invented paper, fireworks and tea!" Rose placed her ice cream cup on the table and picked up a box of chocolate bars and passed each student one bar, "Another yummy treat to end all yummy treats are chocolates, made of cocoa beans and pressed into these delightful bars. Chocolate, is also, gentlemen, perfect gifts for women during Valentines' day, although if that's the only gift you'd be giving your significant other, I would not be surprised if they'd be cross with you."

Rose looked at her students. “I want you lot to pair-up, get some  food of your liking and discuss your food with your partner. If you like it, if you don’t… etcetera, all I ask is for you lot to enjoy.

All these food are almost all eaten with your hands, so best wash your hands before you get any of these delectable foods. Washing your hands should always go without saying but reminders are always good. Wash rooms two doors from here take a left, quick right and another left that’s where  you'll find it."

(Please wait for OCD's up!)

Anders was still eyeballing the chocolate, which meant that he was in the ideal position for being ambushed by a class partner.

"Love some," Anders said, the hopeful expression on his face almost pitiful.

"Love pizza," Anders said, and helped himself to a slice with extra cheese, piled with sausage and bacon. "What happens if you eat it in zero gravity?"

"I hate that," Anders agreed. "Catching meatballs yesterday was enough for me. I don't think I want to do that without gravity on my side."

[OOC: Heh, no worries. I do it all the time.]

"They were pretty good meatballs, actually. But I might be a little bit sick of meatballs by now," Anders admitted. "And the soda. That was fun. Weirdest weather ever, but at least I didn't go hungry."

"That's the thing that scares me about going home when I graduate," Anders said as he reached for a hot dog. "Everything's going to seem so normal and boring. I don't know if I can adjust to that again."

Which Anders hadn't meant to do, and he would have kicked himself and apologized a dozen times if he'd realized it.

"Just a different kind of amazing, huh?" he asked thoughtfully.

Anders's stomach rumbled, and he realized that other than sporadic snack-size helpings of meatballs yesterday he hadn't really eaten much since Saturday night.

"I could go for that, sure," he said as he reached for a couple of cups.

"I always like it when people feed me," Anders said with a wry bit of a grin. "And wow, the fries . . . um, chips . . . are just the way I like 'em, too."

"Gotcha." Anders nibbled at another one, chased it with a bite of fish, and asked, "Is this one of those things where you can't tell me how you do it or you'll have to kill me?"

Anders realized he'd joked himself into a sensitive corner, and took a flamboyant bite of his fish to cover it up. "I'd kinda like to pass on being killed, then." He'd come close enough lately to not want to think about it again.

"Yes ma'am," Anders said quickly, turning to grab the box. "Feasting is on!"

"Fan-frakking-tastic," agreed Anders, watching the steam like it was some kind of sacred portent.
