Monday, February 5, Period Two

"Today, for the first part of the period, work in pairs or groups to review the material we covered in the previous classes. I will be available to take questions if you have them. When the review period is over, Miss Lang and Miss Halliwell will pass around your exams, and you'll have the remainder of the period to complete them. Before you leave today, I will need absence excuses from Armony Eiselstein and Phoebe Halliwell."

Class One (01/08): Introduction
Class Two (01/15): Character Archetypes I
Class Three (01/22): Character Archetypes II

EXAM 1:
Choose two of the following and write a short essay in response to each.

1. In "Jack the Giant Killer", the central character achieves status and riches. In "John the True", the central character sacrifices himself for another. Examine the differences between the two characters, and explain how both still fit the model of "hero".

2. Using the examples provide by "Molly Whuppie" and "The Sleeping Beauty", examine the "active heroine" versus the "passive heroine".

3. Discuss how the three hermits of "The Dancing Water, the Singing Apple, and the Speaking Bird" fit the archetype of "helper".

4. Examine the differences between the parent/family figures in "The Sleeping Beauty" and "Mr Fox".

HOMEWORK: Your reading assignment for next week is "The Rose Tree" and "Brother and Sister".

Try to get a little studying done in amongst the gossip.

The bizarre migraine from the night before was thankfully gone, and Nadia was flipping through her books, attempting to focus on reviewing for the test.

Liz was quietly reviewing the material that she needed to go over.

Kaoru looked over his notes and the stories they'd read so far. He'd studied while at work the other day, and felt pretty prepared for this.

Conner? Totally not eating meatballs while he studied. Really.

. . . the boy had a weird idea of what "cramming" meant.

Marie sat near Conner.

"Wanna study together?"

"Hey, Marie! Sure," Conner replied. "Day-old meatball?"

Turtle gets ready to flex her B.S. muscles.

Using his super-stealthy ninja skills learned over the summer, Jude flicked a note at the back of Turtle's head.

Pizza and translating stuff tonight? I'll even clean my room.

Turtle whipped around, putting anyone too close to her in severe danger of being smacked by her braid, when something hit the back of her head, and she glared around to find the culprit. She frowned when she saw that it was Jude, because he had kicking amnesty, but then noticed the note, picked it up, and unfolded it.

Her return weren't nearly as ninja-like. In fact, it fell a little short of where Jude was, which might require stretching out his leg significantly to nudge it closer with his foot.

Sure! I like pepperoni. :P

Cedric studied his notes quietly.

Jack made himself comfortable next to Cedric, flipping through his notes and looking unconcerned about the forthcoming test.

"You don't even look like you're studying," Cedric said, laughing a little.

Jack grinned. "Don't I? But I've got this book," he showed it to Cedric, "and it's even open."

He laughed and said, "It's open, yes. There are words on the page you could be looking at."

Not that Cedric was looking anymore.

Kaylee looked over her notes before taking the test.

Lana's already studied pretty thoroughly, but there's no point wasting extra studying time!

Layla was going through her notes with another set of highlighters, just in case there was something she'd missed reviewing.

Billy stumps in, sits down, and begins skimming the stories. He hoped no one would trip over his peg leg.

Angela leaned over her notes, half-reviewing, half-daydreaming.

River already remembered what she needed to know and played with her pens instead.

Evie looked worried and reviewed. Quite a bit. In between getting distracted by River with pens.

River noticed, smiled and handed Evie a purple glitter brush pen. "Good for exams," she said.

"I should have gotten some," Evie lamented, nerves putting her on edge. "It would have helped. I should have thought of that. They're very pretty."

"I have spare ones," River said. "You keep that one."
