Monday, January 29, Second Period

Today, the class was meeting in the Danger Shop. Stepping through the door, students would find themselves inside what appeared to be a rustic woodsman's cabin. There was the usual arrangement of breakfast treats laid out on a long wooden table, but no comfortable chairs or couches. Through the windows one could see the edge of a dark forest.

"Today is our first immersion study. I've assigned you to work in pairs, and you'll be actively taking part in one of the fairy tales that we'll be studying a little later one -- "Hansel and Gretel". You'll be taking on the roles of the two title characters, but this isn't a play for you to act out the parts. What I want you to do is to imagine that you are the hero or heroine of this tale, and I want you to find your own way to solve the problem presented. The exercise will take place in three stages. I think it'll be quite obvious whether or not you're successful, but the point of this isn't really to 'defeat your enemy'. It's to have the opportunity to see the tale from an insider's perspective."

"Now, before we begin, I do have just a little housekeeping to take care of. First, if you did the extra credit assignment, please turn that in to one of the TAs. Second, we will be having a test next week on what we've covered so far, regarding character archetypes. So you may want to study your notes and re-read the assignments. Last, the following students should see me after class with a written excuse for your absence last week: ~~Jude Lizowski~~ and ~~Matilda Wormwood~~."

[ooc: As mentioned above, there will be three stages to correspond with the three main stages of the story: the abandonment in the woods, the discovery of the witch's house, and the reunion. Play the parts as ICly as possible, I only ask that you actually do attempt to play out the story. I'll be NPCing the parents and the witch, the two members of each team can decide who gets to be Hansel and who gets to be Gretel. You can thank the RNG for the fact that there's only one male-female team. ~~Please wait for the~~ OCD is now up, ~~but I am off to bed and will catch tags in the morning~~ and I am here.]

Neil nearly choked in the twist on his name and he fought down a snicker because honestly, being stuck out in the woods and left to die was not a laughing manner.

So...uh...there!

"Oh, I hope they are also Judel. We should knock on the door." Neil started towards the house then he paused and facepalmed and muttered aside to Jude.

"Wait, aren't we supposed to start nibbling on the house first? That's what brought the witch out, right?"

"Well, yeah. But we're doing it our way, right?" Jude held up a finger. "And it's always polite to knock before property destruction unless it's Ron."

He knocked on the door.

The door opened so quickly after Jude's knock, that one might have thought someone was waiting there the entire time. An ancient-looking woman with a warty nose and beady black eyes peered out at them.

"Who's ~~nibbling~~ knocking at my door?"

It was on the tip of Neil's tongue to tell the woman that they had creams for that condition but he quickly choked it off as being inappropriate to the story.

Sharing a quick glance with Jude, instead the young man put on his best helpless, hopeful face and said, "Oh, dear grandmother, my sister and I have been left out in the wood all alone and we are trying to find our way home but we have traveled quite the distance and are so very hungry."

The great thing about large dark eyes? You could really work them to your advantage. There might have been a hint of Puck in his expression but if pointed out, Neil would deny it.

Jude had to credit Neil's skill with the large dark eyes. He added a bottom-lip quiver of his own as he added his voice to his "brother's". "Yes, please, lady. We're totally starving."

"Oh, you poor children. You just inside and have some nice tasty soup."

The old woman appeared to be completely taken in by the puppy eyes and quivering lip, and opened the door wide to invite them in. A large kettle was cooking over the fire, and she dished them each up a bowl of soup from it.

Making a subtle 'thumbs up' sign to Jude for the addition of the mighty fine lip quiver, Neil headed into the house, politely holding a chair for his little 'sister' before taking one of his own and a bowl of soup.

But he then paused and waited, in a most mannerly way, for their hostess to get a bowl for herself and join them. Because that's what polite children do right?

"Thank you soooo much," Jude falsettoed, fluttering his eyelashes and following Neil's lead on the waiting.

Also, evil witch, could be poisonous. But that was Jude, not Judel.

The old woman seemed to realize they were waiting for her, and so she dished herself out a serving of soup and picked up her spoon, slurping a bit as she ate it.

"You're too thin, children! Eat up, there's plenty more!"

Jude couldn't resist. He took a sip of soup, looked over his shoulder, and asked Neil with the straightest face he could manage, "Bro? Do these pants make my butt look big?"
