Spy Tech, Class Three (24 Jan)

Wednesday, January 24, Period 1

As the students entered the Danger Shop, they found themselves walking into what looked like a briefing room, with one glass wall looking out into some sort of engineering testing area. M was seated at the head of the table, and once everyone had arrived she turned on a projection screen.

“You are being assigned a mission today. A young woman has been kidnapped, and is being held in an abandoned laboratory off the coast. You will work in teams to infiltrate the building, locate the woman, and retrieve her. There will be equipment provided for you, but no outside assistance. Additionally, we have reason to believe that at least one of the persons responsible for the kidnapping has been spotted in the vicinity of the building where she’s being held. Also, the building itself has been damaged in an explosion, and part of the lower level is currently underwater.”

As she spoke, images appeared on the projection screen, showing a small and obviously damaged two-story building complex, situated literally on the edge of the ocean so that sections were obviously located beneath the surface of the water. Then, the image of a familiar-looking young woman appeared. “This is the kidnap victim. She’s a security professional, who designs lethal traps and other equipment freelance. Much of her business comes from the criminal world, and our people are very keen to get information on a specific system she designed. She recently evaded a capture attempt, but we have intelligence that suggests she’s currently being held by the customer whose system we’re interested in. Be warned, therefore, that she may not be entirely cooperative, as she will be taken into custody immediately upon your return.”

Once M was finished speaking, she led the group out into the testing area, where they were approached by a tall Englishman in a dark suit and protective goggles. He indicated a table holding various items.

“These are the items that will be available to you, when you reach your destination. Although I’m afraid that our funding doesn’t cover school experiments, so you’ll have to make do with some second-hand equipment that was salvaged from previous missions. Don’t worry, I’m certain it’s all just as good as new.”

As he was speaking, the sound of an explosion came from another part of the lab. With a worried expression, the man hurried off, and M stepped up. “Now, I want you to pair up, and then collect your equipment. You may each have either an underwater breather or a snorkel suit, but not both. You may each then choose three of the five remaining items to take with you, and two items that you already have on your person. Q will be available to answer questions about the equipment. Then I want you to step through that door--” She indicated a door labeled ‘PRIVATE’. “On the other side you’ll find a surveillance station. Use the surveillance equipment to learn about the target location. Then you’ll move from there to the abandoned building itself, and complete your mission. Are there any questions?”

[OOC Notes: Okay. Several things that need explaining here, so please read this carefully.

1. You will work in teams. First phase is surveillance, using the equipment described in the appropriate thread below. Second phase is search and rescue, using the equipment you picked up from Q. During the second phase you may encounter some outside interference in the form of the Villain. Also, your equipment may randomly malfunction (I’ll be using a RNG for each team to decide what happens). Additionally, the Victim may not be entirely cooperative. The search and rescue phase will have two threads: one for entering and searching the building, and a separate one for the rescue itself. The building has two levels: one above ground/water, where your "Search" will take place, and a flooding basement level where your "Rescue" will take place. The mission is not completed until you’ve actually removed the Victim from the building. It is entirely possible to fail this mission, either because your team is foiled by the Villain, loses the Victim, or winds up "killing" themselves. ;)

2. I will tag in as necessary to detail the results of your attempts at infiltration (if you attempt to blow something up, if an item you’re using malfunctions, etc.), but you are free to mod the results of your search of the building. Keep in mind that it’s a stereotypical Evil Mastermind Lab, abandoned and partially damaged by a mysterious explosion. Also, the basement is submerged and partially flooded, which means you may need to use your diving equipment to gain access. I am not available on IM during the day, so please ping me in the OOC thread if you have questions or would like to request a response from me in a specific place (a link would be much appreciated).

3. Please have fun with this! Your grade doesn’t rely on actually succeeding in the rescue, but rather in participation. So play true to your characters and their abilities, and feel free to engage in the crackiness. Also, the post is open for play to continue through the week.]

[ETA: Clarification -- Each player chooses one breathing apparatus and three additional items, which means that each team with receive eight items from Q. Additionally, each player may add two personal items of their own.]

ASSIGNMENT FOR NEXT WEEK: Write a brief essay exploring the difficulties inherent in designing underwater espionage technology.

[Posting early for extended play. Please wait for OCD threads are up, you may begin!]

They entered a huge room. Jake ducked out of the way of floating papers and beakers and bits of wire. Damaged laboratory, he judged. He held up a hand to make Annette pause, and swam in a small circle to look for a way out. As he did so, he spotted the flashlight in Annette's back pocket.

He pointed at it, but didn't think Annette realized what he meant so he swam closer, grabbing at her hand to move it down and back to her ass.

OH! Toe caught! Toe caught! Annette struggled with her left shoe for a minute as the end caught just under a chunk of fallen ceiling. Turning and twisting she reached down and tried to pry it loose to no avail. Giving up, she slipped her foot free of her shoe and turned back around to see Jake holding up a hand.

She stopped swimming and made a face as her foot without the shoe grew colder and colder. Blinking at Jake she knitted her brows and tried to mouth the word, 'what?', but he just came to her and showed her where the heck her flashlight was.

Dear lord.

Flicking it on, she waved it around and her eyes widened at the damage of the place. Plus, hello? Flooding water! Annette looked at Jake in near panic and flailed her arms. Hurry...hurry...hurry!

Jake repressed the urge to facepalm at her again and nodded. The flashlight was making it easier for him to see as well, and he finally noticed an opening leading towards broad stairs that seemed to be leading slightly upwards and out of the water. He pointed and shrugged.

She nodded emphatically and surged forward. Out of water was a very good thing right now and she made it to the opening before Jake.

Being wet made moving out of water a little hard though. She felt heavy and the cold had seeped in clear to her bones. Taking the stairs one at a time, she moved on until she was completely out of the icy water.

Then she sat down and leaned against the wall, taking her breathing thingy off and tossing it aside. She watched Jake make his way up to her and Annette stretched out her legs, one shoe on, one shoe left for the fish to chew on.

"Weeeeweee..neeedd tttooo huurry...Jaaakkeeee." Her teeth were rattling just a bit and her lips were purple. "Friiiicccckk....dammmmnn cooollddd waattterrr."

There was a banging noise from a small hallway leading off the stairwell and, yes, back down into the water. Jake, with his cat eyes, might be able to see a small, submerged door where the sound seemed to be coming from. Above the door, water from the hallway was pouring through a grate. On the other side of the door, someone was banging deliberately and insistantly.

Perhaps it was the girl they were sent to rescue?

"I don't feel cold like you do," Jake said, almost apologetically, as he sat down beside her. He removed his backpack because his shoulders were starting to ache from the pull.

He turned his head at the noise, peering back down into the water. "Oh you've got to be kidding me."

She kind of leaned into him when he sat down beside her and like him, she removed her pack too.

The noise had her head snapping in the direction of his. "What Jake?" She did not like the tone of his voice. "More water?"

Annette got up and moved slowly down the small hallway leading from the stairs and the noise got louder and louder. "Jake! I think it might be her!"

"About time," was Jake's comment to that. "I suppose this means we have to go back down into the water, huh?"

The banging stopped.

Muffled Spanish curses could be heard through the grate the water was pouring through.

"Oh. It's so cold." But there was possibly a tortured person on the other side so she said, "Okay. I'm ready."

It was then that she really noticed the area and the grate, and the water from the hallyway rushing in through it. "I think that room there, the one she is possibly in, is being flooded." She looked at him. "She could drown."

Annette rushed forward and dove into the water, swimming across the surface until she got to the grate. "Hello? Are you in there? We're here to help you!"

"It's about bloody time," came a beligerent, heavily accented voice from the other side (Nadia had decided to go with a sort of South American Rich Bitch Princess for the security professional). "I can't get the goddamned door open, and the room's filling up with water! How high is the water on your side?"

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"Very," said Jake, who'd followed at a more leisurely pace. He dived down to get a good look at the lock or whatever was keeping the door shut.
nadiathesaint: (let it go)

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[personal profile] nadiathesaint 2007-01-26 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
More cursing followed this, then a brief pause and some splashing noise.

"That explains it," the voice said grumpily. "Water pressure. The door swings outward, and it won't open that way until the pressure equals out."

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
While he did that, Annette tried to console the irrate woman. "We're checking into that right now. Please, don't worry! We're trained professionals! We know what we're doing!"

Annette was freezing again and thought not to tell the girl within the room just how high the water was getting.

"Stay calm! We, uh, our equipment is state-of-the-art!"
nadiathesaint: (bullshit)

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[personal profile] nadiathesaint 2007-01-26 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Trained professionals my left butt cheek," the woman exclaimed. "You sound more like trained monkeys! Get me the hell out of here already! The water's almost up to my shoulders, and it's getting deeper really fast."

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake surfaced again after trying the door. "She's right. Not you," he added to Annette. "The one behind the door. It's not moving until the entire thing's flooded, so..."

He eyed the grate. "Maybe try pulling that out and throwing in a breathing thingy and, you know, wait?"
nadiathesaint: (eye roll)

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[personal profile] nadiathesaint 2007-01-26 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
". . . 'Breathing thingy'? I'm being rescued by imbeciles."

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"We're doing the best we can! No need for name calling!"

She frowned at Jake when he came up. "I thought to ease her plight a little." So she lied a little, what was the big deal? Geeze.

"Yeah, I'll just try pulling it out while I search for my breathing thingy and wait. Unless you have yours handy?"

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake shook his head. "I'll pull, you search?" He was getting tired of threading water. And he wanted coffee.

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Searching meant she would have to go back below the water.

"I'm sorry Jake, I'll pull." And she hooked her fingers through the metal of the grate and started pulling. Hard.

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, crap," said Jake and dived down again to get back to the stairs where he'd left his backpack. Now that he was thinking about it, he probably shouldn't have left it there.
nadiathesaint: (bullshit)

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[personal profile] nadiathesaint 2007-01-26 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"A little bit of . . . hurry would be appreciated," said the kidnappee, a gasp interrupting the sentence. "The room's still filling up in here!"

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Annette was straining her muscles to get the damn grate off! "Jake! Didn't you have that torch!"

Re: PHASE TWO: RESCUE

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
It took Jake a couple of minutes to get back, but he'd grabbed his backpack and brought it with. "...Oh, right, I did," he said sheepishly in response to Annette. He dug into his backpack and pulled out the torch thing and the breathing thing.

"Well?" the woman on the other side demanded. "Are you getting me out now? I'm going to drown in here!"
