Spy Tech, Class Three (24 Jan)

Wednesday, January 24, Period 1

As the students entered the Danger Shop, they found themselves walking into what looked like a briefing room, with one glass wall looking out into some sort of engineering testing area. M was seated at the head of the table, and once everyone had arrived she turned on a projection screen.

“You are being assigned a mission today. A young woman has been kidnapped, and is being held in an abandoned laboratory off the coast. You will work in teams to infiltrate the building, locate the woman, and retrieve her. There will be equipment provided for you, but no outside assistance. Additionally, we have reason to believe that at least one of the persons responsible for the kidnapping has been spotted in the vicinity of the building where she’s being held. Also, the building itself has been damaged in an explosion, and part of the lower level is currently underwater.”

As she spoke, images appeared on the projection screen, showing a small and obviously damaged two-story building complex, situated literally on the edge of the ocean so that sections were obviously located beneath the surface of the water. Then, the image of a familiar-looking young woman appeared. “This is the kidnap victim. She’s a security professional, who designs lethal traps and other equipment freelance. Much of her business comes from the criminal world, and our people are very keen to get information on a specific system she designed. She recently evaded a capture attempt, but we have intelligence that suggests she’s currently being held by the customer whose system we’re interested in. Be warned, therefore, that she may not be entirely cooperative, as she will be taken into custody immediately upon your return.”

Once M was finished speaking, she led the group out into the testing area, where they were approached by a tall Englishman in a dark suit and protective goggles. He indicated a table holding various items.

“These are the items that will be available to you, when you reach your destination. Although I’m afraid that our funding doesn’t cover school experiments, so you’ll have to make do with some second-hand equipment that was salvaged from previous missions. Don’t worry, I’m certain it’s all just as good as new.”

As he was speaking, the sound of an explosion came from another part of the lab. With a worried expression, the man hurried off, and M stepped up. “Now, I want you to pair up, and then collect your equipment. You may each have either an underwater breather or a snorkel suit, but not both. You may each then choose three of the five remaining items to take with you, and two items that you already have on your person. Q will be available to answer questions about the equipment. Then I want you to step through that door--” She indicated a door labeled ‘PRIVATE’. “On the other side you’ll find a surveillance station. Use the surveillance equipment to learn about the target location. Then you’ll move from there to the abandoned building itself, and complete your mission. Are there any questions?”

[OOC Notes: Okay. Several things that need explaining here, so please read this carefully.

1. You will work in teams. First phase is surveillance, using the equipment described in the appropriate thread below. Second phase is search and rescue, using the equipment you picked up from Q. During the second phase you may encounter some outside interference in the form of the Villain. Also, your equipment may randomly malfunction (I’ll be using a RNG for each team to decide what happens). Additionally, the Victim may not be entirely cooperative. The search and rescue phase will have two threads: one for entering and searching the building, and a separate one for the rescue itself. The building has two levels: one above ground/water, where your "Search" will take place, and a flooding basement level where your "Rescue" will take place. The mission is not completed until you’ve actually removed the Victim from the building. It is entirely possible to fail this mission, either because your team is foiled by the Villain, loses the Victim, or winds up "killing" themselves. ;)

2. I will tag in as necessary to detail the results of your attempts at infiltration (if you attempt to blow something up, if an item you’re using malfunctions, etc.), but you are free to mod the results of your search of the building. Keep in mind that it’s a stereotypical Evil Mastermind Lab, abandoned and partially damaged by a mysterious explosion. Also, the basement is submerged and partially flooded, which means you may need to use your diving equipment to gain access. I am not available on IM during the day, so please ping me in the OOC thread if you have questions or would like to request a response from me in a specific place (a link would be much appreciated).

3. Please have fun with this! Your grade doesn’t rely on actually succeeding in the rescue, but rather in participation. So play true to your characters and their abilities, and feel free to engage in the crackiness. Also, the post is open for play to continue through the week.]

[ETA: Clarification -- Each player chooses one breathing apparatus and three additional items, which means that each team with receive eight items from Q. Additionally, each player may add two personal items of their own.]

ASSIGNMENT FOR NEXT WEEK: Write a brief essay exploring the difficulties inherent in designing underwater espionage technology.

[Posting early for extended play. Please wait for OCD threads are up, you may begin!]

Twisting her lips, Annette bent over and peered into the hole, then she stuck the pointed tip of the lock thing in it and moved it around a bit. "It's so small in there, I don't have much room to try and work it around..." She jangled it a bit, blindly searching for the mechanism that would push the lock back, and allow them to open the door.

This continued for fifteen minutes. Annette cursed under her breath, wiped her hair back from her face, and kicked the damn door.

"Jake. I think it's your turn to try the pick." She frowned down at the door handle and gave the door one last kick for good measure.

Jake was half-way through his bag of chocolate covered coffee beans by then. He jumped when she spoke. "What? Oh." He tucked the bag back into his pocket and changed places with her. He put out the hand with the elongated and hardened fingernails and inserted his thumb and index nail into the lock. There was some wriggling about, but Jake was luckier than Annette. He could just listen to what his cells told him.

It took him a minute or two to get a good hold, but then the lock was pushed back and the door was open. "Tadaa!" he said and gave Annette tiny grin.

She was frowning the whole time. He had been munching away on his goodies, lost in his own daydreaming or whatever, while she had been busily working the dang lock.

Then, he produces a hand with long sharp fingernails and worked the lock free, happy as you please.

She folded her arms across her chest and glowered at the door before looking at him. "Cheater." But his grin was cute and made her smile.

"Okay then smartypants, let's see what's behind door number one."

"You looked like you were having fun," Jake said innocently, automatically ducking his head against possible cuffs.

He pushed open the door. "Okay, things 'llprobably get a little trickier now..."

Chuckling, she said, "Yeah, for all of two minutes."

Annette moved behind Jake, the whole 'men go first in tricky situations' thing. But she laid her hand on his back, peering around him as he opened the door for them to enter.

"It's dark in here." She whispered.

Jake had reflexively altered his eyes as soon as he stepped inside, so it took him a moment to realize what Annette was talking about. "Flash light time?" he suggested.

"Oh yeah! I forgot." She took her pack off and dug in it for her flashlight. Retrieving it, her pack went back on and she pushed the button, turning it on.

"Ohh, it's a mess in here. You think it's safe?" Annette, curious now, moved around him and began to aim the flashlight all around the room they were now standing in.

And she started forward...

Oh! Do you hear that? Maniacal laughter over the building's sound system.

"If you ever want to see your coffee machine in one piece, Mr. Gavin I'd turn around now."

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake halted his step and pretty much spun around and headed determinedly towards the door again at that. He liked his current coffee machine, damnit!

"Jake!" Okay, she was a bit freaked out now, but not enough to quit!

Annette grabbed his arm before he could get out. "Come on. They're just trying to scare us into quitting. We can't quit now." She dug in her pack again and pulled out the explosives. "I'll just hold these, in case, you know, we are threatened too terribly bad. Or something."

She turned around and started walking again, careful of the rubble. "Come on...this way...I'll buy you ten coffee machines if you want." She remembered to whisper.

"But I like the one I have," Jake protested. He was following her though. If Marty hurt his coffee machine, Jake's revenge would be terrible. He'd hire Jamie and Peter to pull endless pranks!

He stepped around what looked like a piece of a desk. "Are you sure you should be carrying explosives like that?" Not that Jake had a clue what might set them off.

"Fine. Be that way," said the voice. "Security? Please send a detail down to sector 7-K"

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Annette shrugged, narrowing her eyes into the places she shone the flashlight. "I don't know. But it's the only weapon I've got." Which still...didn't make any sense at all.

There were a couple filing cabinets knocked over and she moved around these carefully, searching further towards the back of the room.

"Jake?" She asked in a nervous whisper. "I don't know where the heck we're supposed to go."

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake was looking in the opposite direction. "I suggest we go through that door and run like hell before the security gets here (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1201124.html?thread=69983204#t69983204)." He pointed towards said door which was blocked by a filing cabinet.

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Her eyes widened and she looked at Jake, then at the filing cabinet blocking the door.

"Crap!" She ran to the cabinet as quick as she could with a pack on her back and her arms full of explosives. With one hand, she reached down to try and move it.

"Come on Jake! Help me!"

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm helping, I'm helping," Jake said mildly and gave her an amused look.

Their combined effort managed to shift the cabinet, and the door was free to be opened, so Jake did, and stared into a hallway. "Huh."

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
She stared around him, because she was behind him again.

"You go first."

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a lot of hallway, Jake noted. With doors and sharp turns. Since Annette was blocking the way back and was holding explosives, he surrendered. "All right, all right."

He moved quickly up to the first corner, then poked his head around. He waved for Annette. "It's safe so far, c'mon."

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Diligently she followed, after his coast is clear signal. Her arms were wrapped tight around the explosives and for some reason it really dawned on her that there were explosives!in her arms!

"Oh my god!" Flailing. Much flailing. Annette looked at Jake with wide eyes and threw the explosives behind her. "Run!"

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"What the hell did you do that for?" Jake shouted as he ran. He had no idea if throwing them would make them detonate, but he wasn't intending to hang around to find out.

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know!" She yelled back just as a small explosion (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1201124.html?thread=69992932) rocked the hallways and everything around them.

"Oh my god!" She was running fast, right behind him.

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"You threw explosives! You had to have a reason!" The whispering approach? Pretty much abandoned by now. Jake slowed down after a while, ending up bracing himself against a wide closed door, and looking back the way they came. "...Well. At least we can be pretty sure no one is following us."

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] misshargrove.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Don't yell at me, Jake! Can't you see I'm barely holding on here! My sensitivities are shattered!" She was yelling back, running and looking over her shoulder behind her.

...and she ran right smack into Jake, cause he had slowed, and Annette screamed. Not loud, just a little one; he startled her, or she startled herself, either way was not good.

Following his own movements, she leaned against the wall and bent over bracing her hands on her knees. "See? The explosives was a good idea. I am so smart."

Re: PHASE TWO: INFILTRATION

[identity profile] courier-gavin.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Jake just facepalmed at her. Maybe it was a good thing they weren't given the choice to carry weapons. He looked around at were they were. It seemed to be the end of the hallway, with door on either side and... Jake squinted through the broken glass on the door he was leaning against. "Hey, stairs."
