Revolutions: Week 3 Period 5

Aly was totally not pouting at the stack of freshly baked pie on her desk.  It was frowning, really.  And not because she was anti-pie in any way, but because those lovely pies had been the notes and materials for her lesson today just minutes ago.

She looked up from her scowling as the class found their seats.  "So.  We have pie today instead of class notes.  Which really.  I'm perfectly okay with."  She glanced at one of the TAs.  "Want to go grab some forks and plates so we can at least enjoy it?"

"Since I'm not going to try to redo all that," she gestured vaguely at the pies, "right now, we'll go for a different activity.  The past few weeks we've discussed what would move you to revolt against a government.  Today, we'll put that into practice a bit."  Aly reached for the class list and pouted scowled once more as she realised that too was pie.

"Right.  Three groups.  One's the representatives of the government - a monarchy, yes," she said with a smirk.  "The second group is formed of potential revolutionaries and the third, the general people on the street.  It's gaining the support of the masses that will allow a popular rebellion - as opposed to a coup d' état of some sort - that allows a revolution to gain momentum and hopefully eventually succeed.  Today, we're going to work on gaining momentum."

She listed off the groups - of course they were totally random, really - writing them on the whiteboard as she went.

Monarchy
Revolutionaries
Unaffiliated
Alec
Belthazor
Sam
Tyler
6
Parker
Aeryn
Anders
D'anna
Marco
Seely
Isabel
Jamie
Zuko
Balthier
Marie
Irulan
Walter
Charlie
Steerpike
Bridge

Aly grinned mischievously back at the class.  "Makers of mischief and revolution?  Feel free to decide on what exactly you're rebelling against.  Stalwart supporters of Her Majesty's government?  Obviously you don't want the reactionaries to succeed.  Both of your groups need to focus on gaining the support of the people and possibly finding supporters in your opposing camp."

"If you have any questions, ask them now or during class.  We'll add some more factors into play next week."

[OOC: Go ahead and invent why you're rebelling, why the government should stand, fun flying horses, anything you like.  Unaffiliated peoples?  If a group convinces you to join them, go ahead and tag into their camp and start working on your friends.  Feel free to try to convince people in anyway other than actual violence or threats, thank you very much.  Aly may be poking her head into discussions, the camps, etc.  Feel free to ignore her or try to convince her join up.  OCD is coming up]

Tyler chuckled to himself at being on this team."All hail king whatever," he muttered, as he waited for his group to coalesce.

"She hates me," 6 grumped. "It's the only explanation."

"Which she?" Tyler asked.

"That teacher," 6 said. "I would never represent a tyrannical government."

"It's not my thing either," Tyler said. "I kind of figured it didn't matter for a class, but we could try to subvert from within."

"With pie?"

Tyler glanced at his backpack, which was now full of miniature lemon meringue pies. "As weapons," he asked, "or as bribes?"

Bel? Totally not smirking as he thinks how easily he can infiltrate the revolutionaries.

Is that what they call it these days?

Parker started making a list. "As the authorized government, we need to get popular suport, as well as taking out the reactionaries."
demonbelthazor: (Bel is determined)

"I've dealt with rebels before," Bel said. "Leave that part to me."

No, that didn't sound sinister at all.

Parker rolled her eyes, and pinched the bridge of her nose. "It's too early for violence. We'll lose the populace's backing if you go in guns blazing. So to speak." She tapped a pen on the desk. "Save that for the endgame, if we need it. Intelligence--" She gave him a dry look. "--is in short supply. That, we need."

"I could try to pump Anders. For details," Bel said, looking over at the other group. "He...owes me a favor."

Parker's expression at this assertion became complex, bizarre, and finally ironic. "I'm sure he does. You really think he'll give-- he'll talk that easily?" She dug a pen into her notebook, a little too hard.

"Endgame, Parker?" 6 asked sarcastically. "You appear to take to this quite easily. Have experience?"

Parker sent him a wary look, then coolly said, "No more than anyone else here. I read spy novels. Sue me." And manuals. And of course, there was always the Centre's way of thinking to fall into without realizing it. "Have you any suggestions?"

"We could just overwhelm them with numbers," Tyler said. "Get the army out and crush the dissidents."

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-01-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"We could, but is that our ultimate goal? How are we going to eat, if there's no one to do the work? And how many new rebellions do we want to start?" Parker looked thoughtful. "We need to know what their numbers are, and if that's a viable plan."

Alec was doing some of his knitting from 1st period (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1198849.html), which could be seen as analogous to the interwoven strands of monarchy/insurgents/neutral parties, creating a delicate yet cohesive whole - or possibly how little Alec liked the idea of being one of the monarchs. Your call, really.

"Wouldn't the easiest thing to do be to just find out what the revolutionaries' issues are, and attempt to be receptive to them?" Sam suggested, "People don't revolt if they're happy."

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Parker pointed at Sam. "Exactly. And if they're stupid issues, then the population stays on our side." Parker took a bite of chocolate pie. "Plus, we have pie. Everyone loves that."

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
"So, we send a diplomat over to talk to the revolutionaries, maybe?" Sam looked around at their fellow students, then made a face at Parker. "I think we're a little short on diplomats."

Re: [Rev - 1/23] Monarchist's Camp

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Parker looked at their group, then over at the Revolutionary camp. "Maybe offer to talk to-- I don't know. Isabel and D'Anna? And at least hear what platform they're espousing. I wouldn't trust Seely or Jamie not to make something up ridiculous and then try to steal pie."

Re: [Rev - 1/23] Monarchist's Camp

[identity profile] carter-i-am.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
"I think you're obsessed with pie, Parker," Sam said dryly. "We also need to find out what the concerns of the undecided people are. If we can appeal to them first, no revolt. I can talk to Charlie." Which should be an interesting conversation.

"I'll grab Bridge. I need to talk to him anyway." Parker gave Bel a dry look. "Evidently we have our secret infiltrator already. And I'll see if I can't Isabel or D'Anna too."
