"It is the first time I will not use my poison snooper," Irulan explained, still expecting to explode at any moment. "In my planet, it is unfortunately, a habit to poison other people. My whole life I have relied on the device whenever I ate or drank."

Conner frowned. "Wow. That's . . . we don't poison each other out of habit around here, but I guess that must be a hard habit to break, huh? Checking for poisons, I mean, not poisoning people. You don't, uh -- you're not in that particular habit, are you?"

Irulan laughed. "No, I do not even like poisons, but I am usually a target *of* poisons." She sobered quickly, "It is a hazard being the heir to the throne."

"Yeah, I bet it is," Conner said, sobering himself. "It was tough enough being the captain of the soccer team, but wow, I'm never complaining about that again."

"I am used to it." Irulan said simply and gestured to the chair before her, "Please, sit."

Alright, she *hasn't* keeled over and died.

Conner set his tray down and hesitated. "You're sure you don't mind?"

Kira did always tell him he'd never make it if he had to behave around royalty, after all.

"Please," Irulan said with a nod, "I would like the company."

"Well, then, glad to keep you company," Conner replied, easing himself into the chair across from her. "Just as a warning, I might slurp my soup sometimes. I don't do it on purpose, though."

Irulan smiled. "Warning noted." She was maybe poking the cup. What if the first sip wasn't meant to do anything at all? What if it was the second sip that made the poison work?

"It should be fine, honest," Conner said. "From what people tell me, the food hasn't even done as much as make people sing in over a year."

"That's... nice." Irulan said not very reassured. She lifted the cup and nervously toasted Conner, "Wish me luck," and sipped. She placed it back on the table and waited.

"I'll drink to that," Conner said cheerfully. By way of reassuring her -- which probably wasn't much -- he took a healthy gulp of his own hot chocolate and promptly turned red because, you know, hot.

If she was the type to laugh heartily, Irulan would have at Conner's sudden shift to red. Instead, she said, smile playing at the corners of her mouth, "Hot?"

Conner just clapped both hands over his mouth and nodded, his eyes twisted up in some comical fashion. Kira would probably be facepalming at him right now.

"It's why we sip." She said, biting back a grin.

Conner wiped his mouth off on his sleeve -- real classy there, McKnight -- and grinned at her ruefully. "Yeah, I keep forgetting about that part."

"How was your weekend?" Irulan asked, mentally counting to just in case she did keel over.

Conner let out a laugh that was much closer to a whimper. "I didn't become anybody different, if that's what you're wondering. But it was still trauma."

"You too as well?" Irulan said with a shake, "I could not cope for days as well."

"D'you turn into anyone else, or did you just get the fun of watching everyone around you apparently go crazy?"

"I was privy to seeing everyone become people and creatures they were not." Irulan's smile turned rueful. "Although, now I see we took the better end of this strange phenomenon."

"Yeah, but I'm gonna need the brain bleach to forget some of the stuff my friends did," Conner replied. "Or . . . almost got me to do."

Irulan winced in sympathy. "I understand your meaning." Sixty seconds has passed and she still alive and functioning. She grinned, "I have no adverse reaction to the chocolate drink! My expirement worked."

Conner looked into his half-empty mug, back at Irulan, back into his mug, and back at Irulan again. "Congratulations! I'd hate to have to explain why you keeled over right in front of me."

Irulan let out a soft laugh, "It would be awkard questioning, not only from school officials but to my Father and my Sadaukar guards as well."

"I don't do really well under interrogation," Conner said awkwardly. "Even if I didn't do it."

And now he was starting to peer suspiciously at his hot chocolate.

"Most people don't." Irulan said with a nod. "Has any of your items turned to pie?"

Her headdress turned pie was still a point of contention for her. She may have frowned a bit.

Conner sounded more than slightly sulky when he said, "Yeah. My soccer ball. And my favorite pair of sweats. And I don't even like rhubarb!"

"One of my headdress turned to pie, too." Irulan said, sounding a mite more sulky than her ordinary reserved tone.

"Ouch, I'm sorry," Conner said, putting as much genuine feeling into it as he could, because really, those headdresses were kind of scary. "Was it at least a decent kind?"

"Blueberry," Irulan said and there was more woe to her tone. "I like blueberry but I am afraid to eat it, what if it turned back into my headdress?"

"Yeah, I know what you mean," Conner agreed. "I was so hungry I would've eaten the stupid pie, but I didn't want it to change back so the next thing I knew, I was eating my own ball."

Pause. Bug-eyed look. Cough.

"Soccer ball."

Irulan's eyes widened, not knowing what to say, she sipped her chocolate instead.
