Conflict Management and Resolution: Mon Period 4 - Class # 3 - Jan 22
Another class where there were no treats or yummy goodies to help ruin appetites before lunch. Ah well, it had been a strange sort of weekend and Wilson hadn’t even really had time to run by J GOB for anything.
The professor himself was leaning back against his desk, arms crossed as he watched the kids come in and settle down in their seats. He was wearing a slightly rueful expression, which usually meant that while he regretted something he was about to do…he was going to do it anyway.
“Good morning.” He said to the group. “Well, I’m afraid that strange weekends in Fandom do not get you a reprieve from announced quizzes. So, I hope that any of you affected by this past weekend’s…err…uniqueness, had a chance to study before Saturday. Okay, everybody take out a pen and a piece of paper, the questions will be up on the overhead.”
While the students got out their supplies, Wilson walked to the overhead and set the film with the quiz on the glass.
“You have fifteen minutes for this quiz. Points will be calculated on how complete your answers are so even if you don’t know all the parts of a question, still try.” [ooc: Or handwavey if you need to. :)]
The Quiz:
1) List the 5 forms of Interpersonal Conflicts.
2) List the 5 sub categories of Justice Conflicts.
3) The material mentioned that in the case of violent conflicts it is usually women who bear the brunt of it but how is it mentioned that this has strengthen women?
4) List out the characteristics and factors of an Intractable Conflict.
The Lecture:
After having the TAs help him collect the quizzes, Wilson walked back up to the front of the classroom and hopped up on the desk.
“All right. So, in the past couple of weeks we’ve had an introduction to conflicts and discussed different types of conflicts. Today we’re going to start looking at the various ways to manage and resolve a conflict.”
Leaning back over the desk, he pulled down a film and walked over towards the overhead projector.
“Today we’re going to start with ADR’s, short for Alternative dispute resolution. An ADR is a term generally used to refer to informal dispute resolution processes in which the parties meet with a professional third party who helps them resolve their dispute.”
As he spoke, Wilson put up the overhead films with the different types of ADR they were discussing.
Communication Skills and Techniques Communication techniques are methods used to improve communication between individuals. A different slide gave sub categories for this idea.
Intermediary Roles One of the principal insights of the conflict resolution field is that intermediaries who attempt to approach conflict from an independent, fair, and neutral perspective can help parties work through their difficulties in ways that would be impossible for them to do alone. These resources summarize the theory behind third party intervention. More details on the next slide.
Negotiation Negotiation is bargaining -- it is the process of discussion and give-and-take between two or more disputants, who seek to find a solution to a common problem. Further subcategories of Negotiation. These are likely to be important.
Mediation This topic was liable to become it’s own class as was obvious by the amount of information Wilson went over.
Arbitration Another topic liable to be broken into smaller pieces over the course of the semester.
Adjudication Adjudication is a judicial procedure for resolving a dispute. In the context of ADR, it usually means the traditional court-based litigation process. Further details neatly typed up on an overhead.
Mediation, Court-Based This one seems to get a little tricky doesn’t it?
ADR – Evaluation More details
Court-Based Processes And the last overhead of the class, woo!
Class Activity:
As he finished the last part of the lecture, Wilson shut down the overhead and called Pippi and Blair back up to the front of the room to pass out another set of papers.
“Okay, for today’s exercise I want you take the enclosed self evaluation. Be honest and be fair as this will give you an idea of how you personally approach conflict at this point in the course. This is not for a grade it is to give you and I an idea of what areas you have strength in and where you might need to work. You have the rest of the class period to complete this evaluation, please pass it in on your way out.”

handwavilytook the quiz and did okay. Not great, but not horrible either.Re: The Quiz
handwavilytook the test, knowing all the answers and possibly giving him more information than he'd needed for complete answers. She always studied the week before so she didn't have to worry so much over the weekends.Re: The Quiz
Re: The Quiz
2) Power Inequities, Civil Rights, Human Rights(Human Rights Violations), Political Rights, Value Conflicts.
3) Annette kind of wrote a good bit right here, most likely more than was necessary, but hey, she had read and studied and just couldn’t quit.
4) Same here. So much writing.
Annette thinks she did fairly well on the quiz and was felt fairly confident.
