Traditional Fairy Tales, Class Three

Monday, January 22, Second Period

Aziraphale really wished he could have stayed home, preferably hiding someplace very dark where no one would know to look for him. Especially he wasn't looking forward to facing his students on this Monday morning. Which was why there was a huge television screen on one wall, and the furniture was all arranged so that it could be easily seen. There were also handouts and books available for the students to borrow. Aziraphale stood near the screen, and looked mostly at his chair when he spoke.

"Today, er...we're going to be seeing a film. It's called The Royal Fiancee, and it illustrates much of what we've been discussing in class about character archetypes. Particularly, I would like you to pay close attention to the secondary characters -- the ones who might fit the roles of 'helper', 'parent', or 'lover'. In this film, since the two central characters do fit the mould of hero and heroine, I would like you to consider how each could also fill the role of lover. Your handouts will help you with the definitions.

"Also, next week we will be meeting in the Danger Room, and the following week we'll have our first exam. Yes, Miss Stewart, before you say anything, I do know that I said we wouldn't be seeing any films. But I still expect you to do the reading, regardless."

Then he went off and found a dark corner to hide in.

Handouts: Definitions

Assignment: "The Dancing Water, the Singing Apple, and the Speaking Bird" and "Sleeping Beauty"

Extra Credit: Write a brief essay identifying the roles of helper, parent, and lover in "Mr. Fox" and "John the True".

[ooc: Aziraphale is attempting not to die of embarrassment over the weekend's activities. Feel free to hinder his attempts. Kindly wait for OCD is now up.]

Conner was paying attention. Really.

No, really . . .

Marie slipped Conner a note.

I am so, so, so, so sorry.

The note Conner sent back in response just read:

Marie? Is that you?

Yes, it's me. But yesterday wasn't me. Or at least I didn't know it was me. I don't know. I'm sorry.

Yes, she was blushing furiously.

Conner gave her an encouraging smile.

Hey, totally okay. I'm just glad you're back.

Marie managed a tiny smile in return. At least one person didn't hate her.

I'm not sure if I'm glad to be back or not. I'll let you know after I talk to Jamie and a few other people.

Hey, it's fine, Conner scrawled on his next note. I've seen this sort of thing happen before. If anybody gives you crap for it I've got your back.

A second later another note landed on her desk.

Not dirty.

Marie actually giggled when the second note landed.

Thanks. And thanks for being my friend.

The giggle was an encouraging sign.

Any time, read Conner's reply. No offense to Polexia, but I like you better this way.

The only thing I regret is that she could touch people and I can't.

Conner didn't know how to respond to that, and for once was wise enough not to try, so he just gave her a slightly crooked smile.

Marie smiled back and tried to pay attention to the movie.

Lana passed Conner a note as well. She couldn't even look at him.

Conner,

I am so incredibly sorry about this weekend. I can't believe I behaved that way. I should never have done that to you. I will totally understand if you don't want anything to do with me again.

Conner read the note over a few times before writing a response. It took him several tries and a couple of sheets of paper, because this was a lot more awkward than he thought it'd be, but he finally passed one back.

Hey, I'm the one who should apologize. I could tell you weren't yourself and I didn't try to stop you right away. If anybody else gives you a hard time about what you did while everything was weird, I'll back you up, okay?

I was myself, that's the problem. Or, at least a version of myself who just acted on whatever she wanted. Not like Jim, who was an entirely different person. I was just... a horrible slut. And you did stop me and I'm forever grateful to you. Not that it wasn't you weren't really good very nice, but... Anyway. I'm sorry.

Evie saw Conner, and meeped. And tried to hide inside the collar of her jacket.

She finally passed him a note that said: I don't blame you for running away to look for muffins. So very sorry for embarassing you!

Then she pulled the collar up over her head.

"Aww," Conner muttered as he read the note. He was going to run out of notepaper at this rate, but he pulled a fresh sheet from his notebook and scribbled:

Hey, it's okay. To be totally honest it was a really nice sight.

Look, Conner's only got so much tact to spare on any given day.

Evie flailed a bit. If she'd actually been under the desk, she probably would have knocked herself out on it.

Blushing very very hard, she wrote back, Thank you. You too. And thank you for running. That could have been much worse. And everything.

She hoped her couldn't read the scribbled out part, but really, her handwriting is too good sometimes.

Wow, look, Conner just turned the same color as his shirt.

Well, he wrote back after a little bit, That sort of ended up being the story of my weekend. It's all good, really.

Evie saw the blush and smiled in relief, then read the note and sighed in relief. Right, then, she wrote back. Want a muffin?

She held out an orange-and-poppyseed one from the sideboard, and started giggling.

Conner read the note, looked at the muffin, mouthed, "Sure!" -- and doubled over in silent laughter.
