Adventuring Survival Tactics, Period 4, A Classroom, 1/19/07

The Doctor had upgraded from carpet swatches to bean bag chairs, this week. There were a multitude of colors and patterns. He was sitting in one himself, that was bright pink with big white polka dots.

"Today, we're talking about a very, very important tool. That is running away. Also known as the tactical retreat, skidaddle, and vamoose. You may think that facing up to something involves standing your ground and not backing down, but that's just completely nutters, that. You stand your ground when you're ankle-deep in quicksand, you've doomed yourself. Now, retreat a few steps and get your enemy there, well, congratulations. You've used running away to your advantage, you have."

He clapped his hands together and smiled.

"Now obviously, this topic could have a lot of debate. And that's exactly what I want you to do. Pair up, and do a bit of pro/con work. Think about how you can use retreat for good, and how it might not work out. Also, think about any adages and sayings you know. Living to fight another day is much better than dying a brave man, I've found. I'll be happy to debate this point with anyone, but the main lesson here is this: There is no stigma to running away. It does not make you a coward. A coward dies in the face of horrible odds. A brave man retreats to live under opression until his true opportunity presents itself."

"Also, I want you to think about the importance of proper footwear, how high heels will be the death of all of you, the ability of women to find the one pothole in an open field, and why twisted ankles are completely and utterly inevitable. Go on. Discuss."

He felt rather smug.

Even though he'd really just succesfully taught... almost nothing at all.

The Doctor will be fiddling with his sonic screwdriver until people are all gone and stuff.

"Something wrong with the sonic screwdriver?" Rose asked with a smile. "Or you just tinkering to make it more sonic?"

"Everything could be a bit more sonic," the Doctor said. "Hello Rose."

"Hello, Doctor," She replied and took out a paper bag, "Bought myself five banana cupcakes, could only finish two. Hungry?"

"I like banana," the Doctor said. "Course I'll have a couple. That's very thoughtful of you."

"No plan really," She said easily, shaking her head. "Apparently, spending a few years with you also made me like bananas. Its like an agenda of yours. What you teach today?"

"Running," the Doctor said, proudly.

"Running." Rose repeated in tones implying she was less than impressed. "I can see why they pay you the big money."

"Very important, running," the Doctor said. "First thing I ever told you."

"So it is," Rose agreed, suppressing a grin. "Next to anything else, running's the best strategy there is."

"Exactly," the Doctor said. "How are you today, Rose?"

"Oh, I'm good," Rose said then made a face, "Was better though before I got an email from a colleague of mine."

"Something wrong?" the Doctor asked.

Rose waved a hand, "Oh, she's just bein' a pain in the arse. Sort of have a professional rivalry going on and she's needling me for 'quitting'."

"Oh, what little does she know," the Doctor said. "You're in a much better spot now, you are."

"Yeah, like I'd ever quit -- don't count school, that was just me being stupid, anyway, just on sabbatical." Rose looked at the Doctor and smiled. "But, reckon, there are worst places to be."

She tossed a cupcake to the Doctor, "Me and Jack are gonna have a chat some time next week, how much should I or shouldn't say to him?"

The Doctor thought. "What you feel comfortable with," he said. "I trust you."

"My discretion, right." Rose said, nodding thoughtfully. "What does he know about you anyway?"

"Not much," the Doctor said. "In fact, he doesn't know anything about our possible future together."

"Jack's pretty sharp," Rose said skeptically, then began to shift and looked down and put another banana cupcake forward, just in case. "When we first met I, uh, may have given him the impression that I knew him or will know him."

"Ah, well, impressions are one thing. Facts and details are another," the Doctor said.

"Alright, I take your meaning." Rose nodded before asking, "Are you going to Emma's party?"

"Not I," the Doctor said. "Tempting, perhaps, but I'll let everyone else do the mingling thing."

"I'm so very shocked with that response," Rose joked, then grinned. "Mickey, my Mickey says 'hello' by the way."

"He would," the Doctor said. "Feel free to invent some sort of nice response back to tell him I said."
