Science! (Thursday, Period 7)

Ms Frizzle and Liz were playing catch as the class arrived, her ensemble for the day having a definite baseball theme, from her dangling softball-shaped earrings, to her bat-and-diamond print dress. "Good afternoon, class!"

"Today is all about motion!" she announced, pacing in front of the class and slipping suddenly, windmilling for a moment before catching herself. "Whoops! Not enough friction there! Sometimes friction, the force of my foot against the floor, for example, is a good thing." She stopped by the end of her lab bench and thrust a finger in the air. "Liz, slide me my class notes"

The lizard obliged, pushing a thick towards the woman. And although she pushed so hard she flopped over onto her scaly stomach, the book stopped sliding halfways across, still out of reach of the teacher.

"And," Ms Frizzle continued, a worrying smile beginning to spread across her face, "Sometimes it isn't. Hikaru, if you wouldn't mind, we'll need that book I leant you."

She picked up the book and began flipping through until she reached the page she was looking for. She held up the book, displaying a picture of a baseball diamond. "Imagine, children, a world without friction! You wouldn't be able to do this -" she jumped to the left, and took another step to the right "- or this -" she hopped a few steps of the Schottishe "- even if it would be easier to do this!" And she executed a Risky Business-esque slide across the front of the classroom.

She stopped. "I know!" she said suddenly. Her earrings began to glow. She snapped the book closed, thrust one hand in the air, and began marching out of the classroom. "Everyone to the bus!"

[[Thank you to everyone who offered their hugs, it means a lot. Things are being resolved, I'll try to pick up pings when I can. And yes, this lesson might look a little familiar. Please wait for the OCD. Play ball!]]

Field trips were very cool. Field trips where you shrink into a book? Freakin' weird. Turtle sure is impressed with what virtual reality can do these days, and was thinking she looked pretty sharp in her purple baseball uniform. She looked around for a baseball to lob at Hikaru's head before the game started.

Green wasn't a color he especially admired, but as long as he had his hood on under it Nova didn't care. He gave a small wave to the opposition.

Ack, weird kid who apparantly liked her waving at her! Turtle found a new target. Unfortunately, whenever she tried to pick up a baseball, it slipped right out of her fingers and rolled away. "Hey," she frowned at it, tried again. Slip, roll. "Hey!" Slip, roll, slip, roll.

She could be at this for a while.

Friction-less world? Seemed as good a time as any to 'accidentally' smack into Turtle and bounce out of the way before she can kick him or something.

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2007-01-19 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, but Turtle was as sure as heck gonna try! Futily, but she tried.

However, one didn't need friction to plot revenge.

Mac wasn't quite sure what to make of this, so she jumped experimentally, just to see what would happen.

Turns out, jumping around when you're frictionless isn't that easy, and she skidded off to one side by accident. Quite possibly, straight into someone else.

Valentine had seen a great many uses for books in his lifetime. Mode of transportation, faithful companion, sphinx deterrent...
This was new, even to him.

Partly because he had never played baseball.

Partly because the moment he crawled down into the diamond, he slipped, landed on his behind, and went skidding over first base, into a wall, and then bounced backward to continue on over second.

"This is the most bloody ridiculous game I've ever played," he mumbled, his arms crossed and his pride rather wounded.

Sokka careened off a wall and collided with Valentine.

"Sorry!" he exclaimed.

Of course, this resulted in Valentine not only sliding backwards on his butt, but also in something of a haphazard spin, his hands trying desperately to grasp at the ground beneath him in a futile effort to stop the spinning.
"Yeah, I'm sure you are!" He called back.

Re: Play ball!

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Sokka looked around. "Are you sure this is science and not magic?" he asked.

Noting what had happened to everyone else, he stepped off the bus very carefully.

And still slipped, fell onto his backside, and started sliding across the field, spinning slowly.

Alphonse couldn't help but slip a snicker, even if he was a bit hesitant to step out himself. "Pretty sure," he answered for him. "Thank goodness the world's really not like this, huh?"

Re: Play ball!

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"WHAT?" Sokka called, from halfway across the field.

Re: Play ball!

[identity profile] kitty--fetish.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Haah... nevermind," he murmured to himself, stepping off the bus with the most precision he could. Alphonse was still wobbling on his feet the entire way there, but he decided to try to help the poor guy back up. "Want to keep sliding around or should we find a way to get you back on your feet?"

Re: Play ball!

[identity profile] arumonii.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Armony was more than a little reluctant to get off the bus; partly because of the seat that was disturbingly comfortable, and partly because... well, people were skating around a baseball field and slamming into things, apparently unable to stop. On top of that, they had just shrunk and were in a book.

Armony had absolutely no idea what to make of this.

She stepped off the bus, shrieked, slipping and landing on her butt, sliding until she bumped into a random wall. She promptly latched onto the wall to keep from sliding any farther.

Nova witnessed one of his teammates struggling and attempted to go help her. His feet didn't seem to grip the field; however, and he ended up bumping into a wall next to her.

Re: Play ball!

[identity profile] arumonii.livejournal.com 2007-01-19 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Armony flailed some, but smiled at Nova. "Seems you're having a hard time out here too," she said. "Good, I thought it was just my clutzyness running rampant." Using the wall as leverage, she got herself back to here feet; only to fall back on her butt when she let go and her feet slid out from beneath her.

"...Okay I give up. This is going to be ass-ball, from me."

Lucas was already wearing a baseball shirt, so the change of outfit wasn't too drastic. The pants were a little tighter than he was used to, though. The first few minutes were spent staring and wondering how all this worked.

When he saw what other people were doing, and the lack of friction, Lucas smiled. He made a run for one of the bases, but wound up face down in the dirt with a grunt. Running wasn't easy. He looked at Professor Frizzle, carefully pushed himself up and tried skating instead.

He skated for home base and slid in.

Unfortunately, there was no friction to stop him, so he kept sliding until he collided with the fence.

Lucas winced a little, but couldn't help but laugh and cough up dust.

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle went for the first obvious answer: "Do we have any explosives?"

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Personally, I don't bring explosives on high school field trips," Mac said.

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Turtle said with a heavy sigh, "me, neither..."

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Mac shrugged. "Not much call for them most of the time," she continued. "How often does a school bus get stuck in a book, anyway? I'm thinking it's a pretty small number, statistically speaking."

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Turtle nodded. "It's got to be in the low, one to three percentile, I imagine, and that's including bookmarks shaped like buses."

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-01-18 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"That makes sense. I've never seen a bus bookmark," Mac commented.

Mac looked over at Ms Frizzle. "She doesn't really seem to care that we're stuck, does she," Mac said with a vague gesture to the front of the bus.

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] stocksgrrl.livejournal.com 2007-01-19 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
"No," Turtle said with a frown, "she doesn't."

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] imac-kenzie.livejournal.com 2007-01-19 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"So..." Mac looked around. "We're just staying here. Stuck between a load of letters."

Valentine really couldn't care less if he was back to class on time.

But being smaller than a letter on a page? He really didn't want to be trapped that way for the rest of his life.

So, he did what Valentines do best in situations like this. He flailed his arms about until an errant "W" hit him in the face after being flung into the air by the spinning wheels of the bus.

"Bloody--! AUGH!"

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2007-01-19 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka looked around at the other students. "Well, don't just sit there!" he exclaimed. "Come on!"

He shouldered his way through the bus doors, hopped up on the bus's hood, and threw his back into trying to push the book open.

Re: Trapped!

[identity profile] imissmydolphin.livejournal.com 2007-01-19 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
"That won't work," Lucas said, climbing out on top of the roof. "The book's too heavy and there's friction with the air when you try to push it. We're too small. Maybe if we were bigger or if there was some way to lubricate the bus."
